"Breba" means early.
Some figs do not have a breba crop that forms on last year's wood, some do.
All figs start a main crop on this year's growth, but the San Pedro and the Smyrna types do not stay on the tree unless pollinated by the fig wasp.
Breba crops are variable, sometimes not as good tasting as main crop, but often larger figs though. Breba crops are prized for some varieties because they produce earlier in the season. Breba crops for some San Pedro varieties such as Desert King or Norman's Yellow are the reason they are grown. Some people knock off the brebas if they are inferior to get a larger or earlier main crop.
