Large Unknown Figs

I bought a Fig Tree 2 years ago, it was supposed to be a Broun Turkey but turned out to be something else. Lots of large fruits but taste is about 3 out of 10. The tree grows outward more so than upward.

Hello thefigman11

I don't have any comment on your fig other than it is a "handful"

I looked at your profile here on F4F and busted out laughing. You are in a darn good city to be in to drive Corvettes, We use to work for Reliable Carriers and we drove Corvettes there too, right onto our lift gate on our enclosed car hauling trailer!

Regards,

I figured you worked at the Corvette plant!

Great bunch of guy's and gals there!

We could not make it with out the Carriers, all I've met were really nice people who work in all kinds of weather, got to be admired, and to drive the carriers with a load of cars, I'd be scared.
cheers

How many fig trees do ya have?

I will warn you, this fig collecting stuff seems to never end!

Good forum to be on. Ask around here about the fig. I'm a novice compared to alot of members here. I could be wrong( most likely) on that fig id I suggested on FB. I didn't want to impede on Joe's page, otherwise I would have sugested this place.

Welcome figman11. That is one nice fig you have there. Time will tell. Let us see the insides also, that might help.
"gene"

Figman, i live in Morgantown, Ky. half an hour from you, come and visit me and i will give you some figs.

thefigman,

Welcome to the Forum!

I didn't realize you are in Bowling Green until Mario chimed in. It's great to see another Kentucky fig grower on here! It will be interesting to compare notes on how our figs do in each of our locations over time.

That makes at least four of us Kentuckians posting on here now. I'd venture to say that Mario has been at it longest out of the 4 of us. So, we may do well to draw on his experiences so far.

Great looking fig by the way. Too bad the taste isn't so great. Maybe it will get better as the tree matures. Is it green when ripe? Where did you get it 2 yrs ago?

Man, it sounds like a road trip to southern Ky is in order!  Used to pass the 'vette plant quite often as I had a lot of business going in Lexington and Morehead.  But to tell you how far back it was, it was during the construction of the museum.   The underwear plant always intrigued me how it was constructed also.

caney,

Sounds like there are a few of us within a couple hours of one another.

Yeah I pass the corvette plant every time I visit my family in Somerset.

We should try to plan a 'big fig meet' one of these summers when we all have ripe figs to share (or even fall cuttings, etc). Don't know how Mario feels about it but his place would the perfect central spot to do something like that. I won't encourage that any further though without first hearing his thoughts on it.

Man, I haven't been through Somerset in years.  Most of the times I'd go to Lexington, going 65 to E-town and taking a right.
but, sometimes go across a toll road to Somerset and go north through Lancaster and Nicolasville to Lexington. Nicolasville and Lancaster had Antique places I would stop in, but Somerset had a hardware store that had a huge fishing equipment section.  It had some very large lures that I would buy to use on Stripers (rockfish) that I couldn't find any other place.  Still had a number of those lures up until last year when they all got stolen from my truck.  Man that sucked!

The gettogether sounds like fun.  Have in the back of my mind that I might try to get to Paducah for their BBQ festival on the River, but I might have a conflict.

Hey caney,

Yeah, Somerset is still there :] . The toll booths on the Cumberland Pky have been gone for some years now. I used to have to hit one on each end on my trips over there & back. Makes it nice that they're gone now.

I'd be nearly certain that the hardware store you're referring to is Paul's Discount. Huge store that sells just about anything. They're one of those stores that have been there so long they used to carry dynamite that could be purchased over the counter. This is probably no exaggeration.

I know personally, that I was in that store about 40 years ago. My grandad used shop there when he was young. They probably still carry the fishing lures you lost - or simmilar anyway.

I spoke with Mario by phone today. I'll be visiting him sometime between the end of this month & end of next month. It will most likely be on a Sunday afternoon. Just not sure about which Sunday yet. He says his best figs may not be ripe until early next month. So this may be a determining factor on when I visit :) .

Hi Bill, Hi Mario....you will be glad to know that I pointed figman11(David) to F4F. I found him on Bass's FB page and stalked him when I found he was from Kentucky.   Mario---Sunday works out wonderfully for me too, so if that works for you and works for Bill, then hopefully David can make it too.   Keep me in the loop you guys.  I am looking forward to meeting Mario, seeing Bill again, hopefully seeing David...then there are figs to eat, trees and plants to ooh and aah over.  Bill will hopefully give a grafting lesson.

Bill I like your idea for a centralized meeting...we're up to four now and it sounds like Caney might be able to join in sometime.

Now I wonder if the fig David has is the "quarter pounder".  That is one big fig.

I'm a big dummy for not breaking out the scales !!!!!
Sorry about that.
I would really like to meet yall, I'm sure I could learn a bunch.
Sat or Sun will always work for me, we work Mon- Thurs at the Plant
