Last Tree To Ripen

A little morning dew on fig the low last night was somewhere in the 50s .This unknown fig tree is always last to ripen ,now just turning. When wintered there still usually are unripe figs but they taste good with melon overtones. Still a little way to go yet as it will darken and droop down. I will show inside when ripe.

Looks a lot like my St. Jerome, which fruited fro the first time this season. I will be interested toi see what the inside is like.

I will post some pictures for you to see, but from the pictures you posted of your St. J  it does not seem to be the case. What type of taste does that fig have. I looked it up on your site but i didn't see any pictures of your tree.

Well i picked the 1 fig in the above pictures this morning it just started to rain , we have had the driest Aug in 75 years the weatherman said and expected some remnants of gustav that rode a jet stream north here. Several inches expected today and tonight. Anyways it could have stood on tree another day or so but had to pick it because it would have fell with the high winds we are expecting today. It weighed 3.28 ounces , when i cut opened the inside had a mahogany color i ate the fig each piece at a time slowly and savored the taste. I was expecting the melon taste to appear but it never did, instead i was treated with a sugary sweet and a lite fig taste ( unexpected ) in my mouth. Last year very few had this taste and most had melon overtones for a taste, also this fig was not as juicy melt in your mouth fig as last years crop was. Not a lot but there was some crunch i also observed when chewed slowly. Im looking forward to taste more figs from this tree before it gets cold, and hopefully some with that melon taste that i enjoyed last year on some of the figs. Last year this long late season tree gave me 30 ripe figs that were very good then the cold hit. It was sweeter than my EL Sals but had a lighter fig taste. Overall a good fig but so far not as good as last year, hope to taste more and get a better judgment.I do hope the melon tones will appear in some of the figs like last year that i enjoyed. I really like the difference in taste among fig tree's

Jon, i posted more pictures on this and a new thread , you said something about ST.Jerome . Also i will post some more as they ripen and show a better picture of insides of both shapes. Any thoughts?

St. Jerome - sort of a brown sugar - nutty flavor.

Jon look at the thread
More Pictures of last to ripen.
To me yours does not look like this fig, it does have a brown sugar type of taste , no nutty taste present. Also some have a melon taste but those are the very last to ripen figs before it just gets to cold here which is a couple of weeks from now. So i get 1 tasteing fig early and then before season ends somehow  they get a melon taste . Also of course there are 2 different shape figs on tree as the pictures show in this and the other thread mentioned above. I beleive that this tree in my zone acts different in its habits maybe then where it was bought (Georgia) which has a longer season. I will show some more pictures of the oblong different shape figs on this tree as they are turning and also show some of the leaves on tree soon.

Don't dismiss the St. Jerome too quickly. Location, climate, etc. make huge differences in figs' taste and looks. When I get the latest pix from USDA / UC Davis posted, you will see the enormous difference caprification makes, even in figs that do not require it. I didn't even recognize some of my figs, after they were caprified.

You know your absolutely right. I ve seen some pictures on both forums that look different than some of the same i have , different climate and all seems to change taste and shape and maybe not sure even the shape of leaves?
No no i dont dismiss it but for a visual it does look different yes. Just like the sals i personally bought from edible around 2003 they seem somewhat of a darker color than some here with no brown in them or very little but they seem as they ripen more on the tree as season is getting late here they are darker but just as good maybe a tad sweeter. Yes you are correct about taking on different characteristics in different area's of the country. Im just cant wait to get a hold of a black madeira and see what all the hype is ,i know its not supposed to produce here but i love a challenge and also the dark types like all mine are.  : )

Here is another fig from same tree.
Here is the oblong shape that ripened and weighed about 4 and a half Ounces, the first picture when this thread started was of 1 that has a rounder than oblong shape i had tasted several those weighed about 3 and half ounces. I was longing for the melon taste that i enjoyed so much last year, this one had a mild honey dew melon taste along with a mild fig taste both taste blended well together in my opinon, i might only get a few more to taste from this late ripeing variety in my zone last year i had about 30 to taste this year weather in spring and now at this time seem colder than last year. Also the fig looks black here but it was actually a dark purple when i picked today.
