Last years cuttings

Last year before my puppy came into my life, I was gung-ho with fig cuttings - giving and receiving!!  It was a great experience I would like to do again in the future.

Anyway, in a couple of recent posts I have written (within the last 2 months or so), I have mentioned the condition of some of my cuttings from last year-some rooted and lived!!  Woo Hoo!!  some did not fare as well RIP little figgies :(  And yes, there are some still in the fridge.

Anyway, I would like those of you who have received cuttings from me from my families tree let me know how they are doing.  Did they root?  Did they thrive?  Did they survive the winter??  My family tree cuttings are still in the fridge :O !!  Along with the cuttings I purchased from Jon, and a few "extra's" I held back from other members I traded with.

I missed this post, but am only a little over a month late with a reply. That's actually pretty good for me.

I was whining and crying about losing all the fig cuttings (that folks had given me) to mold). Much to my surprise, one actually lived.

I took this picture this morning. JoAnn, there is at least one little fig that I have not managed to kill. It sat in the hoop house all winter with two leaves. It is now showing signs of growth. May not be much to look at by most folk's standards, but I am thinking of showing it at the State Fair this fall.

Thank you very much for the cuttings.

John

My last inventory was 5/1 and they were budding out.  Thanks!  Last year was such a bad year that they're still small.  Maybe I'll get a fig.

I don't know, John42, I think it's a beauty. That little sprout on the right side is gonna shoot right up.
It'll have a nice V-shape by this fall, maybe even a couple of figgies.
Even though rooting has its heartbreaks, survivors like this one are so encouraging...
Sending PM.

Thanks John42!!  It's one of the prettiest trees I've seen:)

I don't remember how many I sent out - must have been to about 18 members.  I tried to look up my excel list and couldn't retrieve it ARGGHHHH!!

Hi JoAnn,
Seems like I too missed this post. I wish I had a success story to tell you about your family tree as I was really looking forward to having another dark fig. But alas, it wasn't to be. None of the cutting survived the onslaught on the fungus gnats last year. They were horrible. This year has been completely different as I haven't lost a cutting to a gnat, in fact I hardly ever seen any, which is great. I hope others have had better success and show us some pictures of the figs. Perhaps I'll be able to get a cutting or two in the future from them.

JoAnn,  I only have one survivor but it looked about like John's the last time I noticed it.  I did cut the growth off and am now trying to root that.  Maybe I will get more from it.  I know you sent me several cuttings I believe I may of had a couple more last summer but gave some to other friends.  I can't remember how many, though maybe some will see this and speak up if i gave them one.  It sounded like a really good fig and hoping to get fruit and more trees from it in the next years.

Thanks for the replies!

Gene, maybe this winter killed a lot of bugs so they aren't as bad this year!

Charitup, woohoo!!  Good for your, more of mine than I have lol

Like I mentioned, I haven't done mine yet, the only thing I got done this weekend was sleep and I bought a cute baby betta fish:)

JoAnn, I got several from you, and yes, one is doing very well and has a few brebas that I am allowing to see what it does with them. However, I am not sure it is LsU or your family tree, the tree is very cute, grows very well and has a great shape I will send you a picture. perhaps you recognize the fruit... if it is yours, I am more than happy to make an airlayer for you.. ready for shipping in the fall, perhaps,.

Grasa, brebas??  Sounds like the LSU Purple.  I don't think my families tree ever made brebas.  I am so glad it is doing well for you:) and I hope you get many figs and many years of growth.

Are you still experimenting with propagation techniques?  This forum is so active it's hard to keep up LOL!

I just found this thread, so sorry the post is a few months late. I'm one of the people Goss very generously gave a rooted cutting to, it didn't move much for me last year, but now it is filling up a 7 gallon root pouch. The bottom figs are ripening and have organza bags on them, so hopefully I should be able to taste it in the next few days! Here is a picture I took yesterday:

Tamar your tree looks better than mine and is the best looking one I've seen and yours has lot's of very nice fruit.  Because I only had one plant left of it I decided to cut mine back and try to root the prunings.  Still not sure if that was a good idea or not.  Especially now after seeing yours.

Several days ago, I had my first fig off of this tree. I knew it could have stayed on a little longer, but I really wanted to try it and figured, hey, there are other figs that I can let shrivel. It had been raining a fair bit in the preceding days, so the flavor was a little watery, but it was still quite sweet, figgy, and with a hint of plum.

I managed more patience for the next fruit, and was very happy I did so. It was shriveling nicely, wasn't very watery, the flavor was much more concentrated and the insides were like preserves.

I love reading about how figs only improve with age, this one is only in its second year and already pretty great!
