Late Introduction

Hello Folks,
I am sorry that I didn't introduce myself before posting " Got Figs" yesterday. I have been reading this forum for a good while. I just forgot to make intro first.

I am Jazzbass. I am new to growing figs. This is my second year. I started my collection with a few figs that I purchased from Lowe's. They were Brown Turkey, Celeste, Chicago Hardy and Black Mission.

I got fruit from all this year. I really enjoyed the taste of Black Mission. But not the other three. So I gave them to a few friends that I work with.

I have learned a lot about figs on this site. I also told the three people that I gifted the figs to, about this forum

Hope to continue to learn and share with all of you.

OK, I can't resist, is a Jazzbass a saxaphone playing fish? Anyway, wlecome.

I am surprised that you didn't like the Celeste and the Hardy Chicago - but people tastes do differ. Also, for the future, some figs have off years, when they just don't taste like themselves. I had several last year which were extremely good tasting, but last year they were not edible- just tasted crappy. So learn to give them a little more time. This year Panache was better than it has been in 20 years. Go figure.

Also, figs are very responsive to weather, sunlight, fertilizer, type of soil (or potting soil), whether they were peed on by a Schnauser or a Poodle, and anything else that can be changed. I have no idea what the difference was last year, that made so many figs really crappy tasting. Maybe a new dog in the neighborhood.

No the name comes from my musical instrument. Fender guitars (electric bass), pronounced jazz base.

I understand that figs change in taste. Some years are better than others. But buying them from Lowe's you can't be sure. I'm saying that the figs looked the same and tasted the same. If I had not marked them you couldn't tell which was which. I was very disappointed.

But the Black Mission was seemed to be as correct. From the pictures of leaves and fruit I have seen.

I am looking forward in the arrival of next years season. So that I may see how my new additions will grow.

Jon, you said "This year Panache was better than it has been in 20 years. Go figure."
I figure it out. Probably lunch was not ready yet when you ate the Pinache while waiting for the lunch.

Well, if lunch has only been late once in 20 years, that's a pretty good record. ;-))
