LdA exploded!

Is this common with LdA???
Had 2 figs and 1 exploded today, not even fully ripe :(

I've had several varieties split this last week with the heavy rains but I have been able to eat them and they were fairly good. None exploded.

It may just depend on the variety and the weather.

Had Stella split on me with 2 promising looking figs.  Now it seems to be taking long to ripen the rest of the figs on the plant.

I see.
So that means that the Stella and LdA are very sensitive to the watering schedule when close to ripening.
I would have to set the pots up on a tight drip timing, a little of water a few times a day.
I guess the figs explode when the watering is very uneven.

I've had 4 or 5 split on my Excel the last couple of days. I think it was my watering, though we got about 1/4" of rain a few days ago. I've also eaten several that didn't split, and they were delicious.

I picked a split Stella today, no rain, but heavy morning dew every morning. Still tasted good, but I probably would have let it go a bit longer had it not split.

maybe wrong watering practices,
I used to water frequently but in small quantitied and found out that the water has to drain from the bottom to wash out salts in the soil ..

now i water my pots for an hour twice a week , learning as i go here :)

Agree, that is what I meant by the watering schedule.

It depends on the climate and whether but in mine super dry, a lot of water twice a week is bad.
The ideal I think would be very little very often.

Hi Greenfig,
In my Zone7, lda is commonly seen splitting this time of the year. It seems to be related to fresh temps at night and not to watering - because :
Of my 6 figs of my lda, 1,2,3 were perfect 4 and 5 did split at the eye - not wide opened but still a good crack- and 6 was perfect / did not split.
Someone an explanation for fig number 6 ?

My "Dalmatie" does split as well but because the weather is a bit milder than normal this year, splitting has not been that bad.
"Dalmatie" is a first class workhorse here this year. I've made "Dalmatie" jam for the first time.

Dalmatie jam sounds interesting?

Many of my Vista did that both this year and last and I believe it's because they can't handle the pressure .... from being caprified.  Caprification results in larger fruit but some varieties don't seem to be able to adjust to a larger size very well.

Interesting, my LdA is from this year's cuttings, quite late appearing. I am not sure if they managed to get caprified.

Greenfig, IMHO, your figs and plant don't seem to be LdA.
The figs shape and size don't match, and the leaves seem to be different as well.
My LdA don't split in that manner, despite my humid climate.

Axier,

Not LdA you say?
The fig on the photo is not ripe yet. I have 2 LdAs from different sources and they look very similar. Also look similar to the
Niagara Black that some say is almost LdA.
Could you post a photo of yours, please?

Ok, I may precipitated in my view, I can be wrong, of course!

I am not saying that your fig is not LdA, I am saying that it doesn't seem to me like a LdA.
In any case, I would have to see more pictures.

You can see pictures of my LdA in this old post (6 years ago!):

http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/longue-daout-pics-2976855?

You can see too the Pierre Baud description:

Longue d'Aout.jpg

Axier where did you find this picture? is it bauds catalog?
do you have it scanned?

BTW it looks exactly like my Niagara black.

It is from the book "Figues" of Pierre Baud:

http://www.amazon.fr/Figues-Pierre-Baud/dp/2952380007/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1411547063&sr=8-2&keywords=figues+pierre+baud

I think that it is currently no longer available.

Here is mine, taken yesterday.

Here are the leaf photos of my LdA and Niagara Black. The trees are young, rooted past winter.
I think the adult tree leaf shape might change a little but they are similar to the photos posted here, maybe not as thin.

ah ha, I had my fig ginormous exploding fig afer a lot of rain we had... it was pretty impressive. I am saving to share with my daughter. I got a huge harvest this morning.  others were all fine. only one went crazy.

Mine got affected by a watering, not rain. I wish we had a rain, the last one was many months ago :(

I would be curious to get an input from people with LdA about my leaves.
Is it a young LdA?

Igor,

This isn't the one I sent you was it?  Mine look like Axier's.

Frank,

Thanks for asking!
No, yours is growing well but has not produced any figs yet.
Hopefully the next year!

This one I started from a cutting.

Good to hear!  My in-ground LdA has given me 1 out of 12 figs so far.  I currently have two more that have just started to swell up.

Frank,
Could you post a photo of a ripe fig for my records, please?
