On one of my numerous baby fig trees this year I have noted curling of the leaves over the past 6 weeks.  This one is a LSU Purple.  A couple of other varieties have had a leaf or 2 that are a little curled but not to this degree.  I do not think the potted plant has gotten dried out, it is in a #3 pot with a 5-1-1-1 mix like almost all my others.  I do not see any pests like mites or aphids on the leaves.   Any suggestions?  Is this a problem?

 

Did it get really hot recently? May a good deal of the roots got killed if so, that is what it will look like if the roots get cooked in the pot. I lean cut boards on the south side of my pots to prevent pots getting too hot. Or may some sort of grub ate some roots? Or maybe not, just a thought.

I've had a couple turn curly and brittle when it was hot and dry.

Does the pot feel dried out?
I have had a few like this.  I put them in the shade and soaked them in water for an hr.  It seems to have helped.

Too dry/too much sun/too much wind or any of the three. That happened to mine when it was cloudy for a week and then sun came out blazing, the new growth didn't take it well.

Thanks for the suggestions.  The weather has not been unusually hot here(80-85 max most of summer), and certainly not dry. It is almost always breezy here but all the others are normal looking.   My small plants are in 2 adjacent rows and this one is in the east row, pot is shaded from the west side by the other row.  Could have missed watering it as well perhaps during one of the few intervals where we did not have rain at least every other day.  Since it started the curling leaves, I have checked the potting mix several times (with the accurate 'finger in pot' probe) without noting anything different than the rest of the plants.

I'll move it to partial shade for a few days to see if that helps

I found some varieties were a bit more sensitive than others; Excel really wilted while Galbun and Lattarula wilted briefly then perked right back up with some water.

It looks to me like it has gotten too much heat, my lsu gold does this when it is hot, I just water it and it gets less but on hot, sunny days it is worse, maybe try putting it somewhere that shades it mid day sun?

I hope it's a dehydration...I have few like that also, and those are the ones that are exposed to sun all day long. The leaves relax and curl with different times...so I was thinking it must be due to dehydration..."hydraulics system" issue, LOL

Ed, you stated that you checked it with the finger method. May I suggest that you pull the plant out of the pot and check to see
if the entire root ball is moist or just in places such as the outside?

One thing I want to add here is that some varieties are less tolerant to hot roots and less water.
For example our Violette de Sollies grow like weeds no matter if the pots are exposed to the sun or not however our Sultane are hyper sensitive to hot roots

too hot, and the plant curls so they hold the moist in them. Tomato plants also do that!  Nature's beauty.. you can give it a little spray and moderate watering.
