leaves growing thin, large and weak.

so i had that incident with fast acting lime. not sure if that has anything with this problem. i have been using MG soluble fertilizer for last 3 yrs or so. they worked fine for me. however, after the lime incident, the young trees are having what seems like a growth spur. they growing fast, and putting out paper thin, large and weak leaves that will burn easy and wilt quickly. the color is very light green and shows definite FMV. if it was one or two, i would blame it on FMV and forget about it. but majority of the plants rooted this yr are having this issue.

i fertilize weekly about 1/4-1/2 strength.

any suggestions?

Pete, I have some but not all of my new plants from this spring that are doing the same thing. The only thing I believe we have in common is the MG. I think I will discontinue that and use my Pro Grow. I also have some organic fertilizer in each pot.

Bad batch of fertilizer with the N-P-K ratios off?  Not that that would happen at any large manufacturing company. : )

That can also happen with a rainy/cloudy period during the spring growth period in May/June

Pete,
When that happens I usually use the 1/4 strength MG fertilizer as a foliar spray, The leaves perk up within a few days.

Pete there is something else going on what i do not know .
As a note i always have used miracle fertilizer and never ever had a problem with it.

Jack, we dang sure have got that for weeks now

i'll try pete s.'s suggestion to see how that works out. thanks.

Could be too much nitrogen forcing the green growth to grow super fast sacrificing strength in the process. Just a theory.

i think the fast acting lime did something to the root. either they are causing fertilizer to get picked up too quickly or something else. i'm going to stop fertilizer for a month and see if new leaves coming out are normal.

Have you been getting good sun?

gina, on and off. but they get about 2-3 hrs of sun a day and that's still burning and drying up the leaves. i assume the leaves are weak and too thin to take that much sun.

Pete if you can post pictures of these plants you having problems with maybe some have experienced what you are now but pictures would be helpful.

i'll try to upload the pix of Pastiliere Baud this afternoon.. before fast acting lime.. after the lime... and now :)

Pete, hope you don't mind sharing this thread since I think I am having the same issue with some plants. Here are some pics of the ones I am having the issue with. The top right pic (White Genoa) has a real thin
top front leaf and it is drooping with just minimum sun today.  The pic in front of it is Zidi, and you can see the sun burn on the thin front leaf. Below that is Conadria, and below that is unk Rosemarys NY. The top left pic has a super thin leaf on the left top side
and the top right leaf is drooping and below that is another Zidi.  All of these plants have been spending the whole day in the sun for 6-8 weeks now and only the new
leaves on these plants look thin and droopy when in just a small amount of sun.

mike, yours do not look all that bad. i'll try to post mine some time soon. mine all look like they are heavily infected with FMV.

Pete, the plant itself doesn't look bad it is just the newest leaf/leaves on each of those that look so thin. The FMV is visible on all those.

Mike,
Your plants look to be more nutrient deficient than anything. Are they being fed minerals,Dolemite limestone (calcium and magnesium) or micronutrients in addition to the Miracle Grow?.

I sometimes add 1/8 teaspoon of Epsom salt and 1/8 teaspoon of Boron (20 Mule Team Borox) for trace minerals with 1 teaspoon of MG per gallon of water. The 1 gallon containers also get one table spoon of Dolemite limestone (pulverized).

<EDIT>  Sorry Mike,
There are always a few bad apples : (

Pete, they also get a good feeding of organic fertilizer and Pro Grow. They have also been given limestone. All of my plants don't look
this way. The other 135 look great.

They'll get real limpy too if they have a consistent supply of nutrients but not very much air movement.  Are they fenced in?  Regular wind works wonders for strengthening plants.  Just an idea.

reading further, it seems this is a common problem when plant is growing in low light and high humidity. solution is to accumulate them to more light slowly.

it's been rather rainy and i keep my new cuttings on front porch there they get at most 1-3 hr sun.

There you go Pete .

Mike your plants will be just fine.
Generally speaking young plants need to acclimate to the sun and when young there like a teen outgrowing there clothes in many case a fig out growing there leafs ie: not being able to support themselves.

In past and have pictures with leaves that were taller and wider than a 5 gallon bucket as plant was young then they adjusted to normal size fig leaves.

Martin, thanks for your positive thoughts. It seems that there are just a couple of varieties that have this issue. Also, there seems to be a couple
that have trouble with the sun as you said. Zidi seems to be the worst one of the bunch. It has been in full sun for 6-8 weeks and it hasn't caught
on yet. Wilts and burns very easily.

Yeah good ole Zidi mine had large leaves . Imagine your palm of hand outward with wrist bend downwards.
Zidi similar always in our yard.
Plant was discarded as it drop its figs here in yard .
I here they were excellent in Cal where wasp pollinate it.
