Hi all, long time lurker first time poster. I live in upstate NY, have 3 trees in containers and 2 already have leaves browning, curling and falling off. And many of the leaves have a brown line on the leaf "stem" not sure what you call that part. The third is doing great. One is a Paradiso and the other is a White Triana. I have attached some photos if anyone has any ideas on what it could be or suggestions on how to fix it please chime in. I have cut back on the water in hopes that would do the trick but it only seems to be getting worse. thanks in advance!
Hello billok,It looks like sooty mould. Does it wash or rub off?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sooty_moldIf so, dishwashing detergent and a sponge worked well to remove from a citrus tree.
Sadly it does not wash off or rub off. All of the brown areas are brittle and dry.
Overwatered -> roots died -> leaves follow? The plant is saving itself by shedding the leaves to save itself? Just a theory. How wet was the soil ? How healthy are the roots? Did you apply too much fertilizer?
Those are some big leaves (and fruit) for this time of year in upstate NY. Were they being grown indoors and just recently been exposed to full sunlight? If so it might be that the leaves are burning since they were not yet acclimated to the sunlight.
Looks like sunburn.
Agree with Arne. Looks like "leaf scorch". Look up the causes. Many of include sun exposure to premature leafing indoors, plant shock (repotting), over fertilizing, wind and cold night temps. No worries it should not kill your trees. The bad leaves will eventually fall off but your tree should eventually leaf out without a problem. Keep us posted.
Thank you all for your input. I appreciate it. Sun scorch sounds like a good possibility. Both trees still seem to still be growing, sprouting new leaves and figs so I guess I will keep my fingers crossed for now.
If you have new leaves forming, you should be fine.
