Your green thumb and fresh cuttings  :-)

I grafted one cutting unto two grafts, and am rooting the other cutting. Thanks for this one. I'm partial to the Lebanese figs as both Reds are very good! It's a fun time of year watching my figs start growing. I expect to taste many new ones this year.

Lol.... all you enablers.... you know who you are.....  lol.....  Resistance was futile...

The heat is on here in southern California and my brebas are getting huge but still very green. Once they ripen, the taste will be irresistible! I will be posting updates along the way.
You won't regret it and happy rooting!

The grafts already took and are growing, I'm done trying to root anything. Grafting works so well! I used one cutting to root, and cut the other in half, and grafted both halves, both are growing now, and the rooted cutting is still rooting. Done with rooting no doubt. Thanks again for this addition!

I agree, Drew... grafting is becoming increasingly attractive to me, the more I do it, the more I like it.... Key challenge with grafting is ensuring sufficient root stock to graft onto... Seems a "Frankenfig" or 3 are in my future....   :-)

Yes, I decided to make a couple franken trees, as you say. I did have a bunch of unknown I decided to use as rootstock. But I used them all! Almost every graft took too. The ones that did not still may, it's still early.
I have 1 cutting of 4 varieties, and all of them took!

Congratulations on your figs graft success, Drew. You are reaching the same conclusion i reached last year. If i want to secure a rare variety the best way is grafting.

Regarding the pictures in this thread. If i hadn't such good varieties grafted myself, i could be getting some fig envy of you guys. Nixgardens, that Lebanese fig sure looks interesting.

By the way, thanks to a good friend, i was able to get my hands on one cutting of Lebanese Shiani (Shiagi?) from Pons collection. He told my friend that he likes this variety very much. I did several grafts with the cutting.

In the database in his website, Pons doesn't have much information on this variety, apart from the origin of the cuttings - he got them from the USA in 2010.

Could it be one of the varieties you are mentioning in this thread?

Jaime... Forum member "Bass" is one of the most trusted sources for Lebanese figs and he has a number of them that could match up to the fig you are asking about... in case you have not seen these previously, here is a sampling from the Trees Of Joy web site...

http://treesofjoy.com/product/souadi/   This is really the only one on the website of Lebanese origin with fairly dark skin... There are a few reds:

http://treesofjoy.com/product/lebanese-red/

bass also has a red on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fig-tree-Batroun-Red-Rare-large-red-Lebanese-variety-/252883636240?hash=item3ae10a1010:g:MIUAAOSwvKtY-UFA

And a few Syrian yellow:

There are a few other Syrians as well...

My apologies if I am repeating what is already known to you...

Thanks for the links, Tony.

I know Trees of Joy website but i hadn't noticed that the Souadi fig was from Lebanon. Could it be that Pons received his 2 Lebanese figs from Bass and that he just mislabeled the fig? Maybe Bass can shed some light into this hypothesis.
In Pons database (pag. 20) he has fig variety nº 971 - Lebanese and nº 972 - Lebanese Shiani (both with USA origin, planted in 2010) and the one i received it's this last one (972). It would be nice if it's Souadi.

Just wanted to post some progress picks of the Lebanese.
From cutting 4/12/17 to beautiful fig tree 9/28/17
Really started growing when I covered it with shade cloth (Tucson summers are very cruel) had to pinch the tip cause it started growing to fast

I have a couple of these starting to leaf. Boy am I excited now!

Hope I don't mess them up!

I had two cuttings of these and since they were nice sized with lots of short spaced nodes, I split the sticks and whip and tongue grafted 2 pieces onto 2 separate good root stock and wrapped the tops of the other two pieces with parafilm to prevent drying out and put them directly into good hand mixed rooting medium in 4 x 4 x 9 square pots. Net, net 0 / 4.... nada, zip.... strike out.... not the first .... or likely the last....

Is this a common fig ?

Supposed to be...

I hope so:)

This fig produces brebas, so it is either a common or a San Pedro type.

Looks like a very nice fig...

This season,
a friend found out he had many variants that are not common

This Lebanese Purple/Black from Nick At Nix Gardens produced very well for me in Michigan this year. Resistes splitting and pretty prolific for being container grown. I recommend it for our climate.

What did you think of the taste?

We had awful growing season in Michigan this year. This fig still made the cut. Everyone should be growing this.
