The people at UC Davis say that using a hormone is not necessary. They also suggest that powdered hormone is detrimental, which has been then experience of many others as well, as it seems to induce rotting in the cutting. Finally UC Davis suggests that if you use a hormone that you use a liquid one. My experience using a liquid hormone has been that it provides little if any benefit when rooting fig cuttings. My experience in using the "new bag method" has been that the organic material in the rooting medium is a great and sufficient inducement to rooting and that a hormone is not necessary. Willow "tea" has been used as a rooting stimulent for many, many years, but I have not tried it. I had planned to try humic acid as a stimulant before trying the "new bag method" with extraordinary results.
