Local Nursery -- Brown Turkey NOT!

the leaves look very similar to Valle Negra and Nero 600M. it sort of look like my VdB, but the fingers on this one is more slender. it would be interesting to see what the fig is like.

Pete, I looked at the leaves of this tree and compared them weekly to my 7 (yes 7!) VdB fig leaves and they are not the same. I got the last one this guy had and it literally was in a corner behind all sorts of other trees. Of course, I'm hoping it's Valle Negra. If it is, then now I have 2! More to come this summer.

VN has a Blood red tip like Negretta and Panevino Scuro ( dark).

Thanks Dom! The tip of these 2 trees is the same color as my Negretta and Toni's Brown Italian. I don't have Panevino Scuro. Thanks for letting me know.

This is reminds of the "Doesn't look like... Petit Negri... but is it?" thread. I saw you had a post in that one. You don't think it's Petit Aubique?

Nope Calvin. I have several Petite Aubiques trees. The leaf pattern on my 2 BT Not have longer fingers. I don't think is PN either.

Hopefully you get some figs this year from them. Please be sure to show us.

Sounds like you ended up with a good deal Dennis.

Gives us a little insight on why the labels don't always match the actual variety. It's no wonder nurseries like Belleclare became so respected (& a few others). They knew what they had & backed it up with info on origins, etc!

This past summer I bought two trees from Tractor Supply that were labeled as BT. Who knows what hey really are. I'm currently using them as rootstock but I'll let a branch or two grow one day just to see the fruit. I also got a "Black Mission" from Lowes. Time will tell as to what it really is as well.

Your find sounds like a much better find than mine though Dennis. I look forward to seeing the ripe fruits on yours this summer.

Do you mind posting the name or location of the nursery. Charlotte native here and I think I might know which one your talking about (on South Blvd?) Wouldn't mind visiting again myself.

Barnhardt, you are correct! It is Campbell's Greenhouse. I do know the tree they sold me wasn't a BT. I did the right thing by informing them. But I got the last 2 BTs. But they do have plenty of Monrovia figs for 55 bucks. I don't care for those though.

Let me know if its good this summer. If so I'll go pick one up. I noticed they have many air layers on their plants if you walk around in the back. They also pushed the black jack to me pretty hard but I passed after seeing the price tag ($54).

Barnhardt, they did the samething to me. I got my 2 trees from the far back corner near the employees only sign, I think I got the last one listed as Brown Turkey. They sold it to me for $28 bucks a piece. My 2 trees are pretty old. They've been in the same pot for a while.....pretty root bound. Can't wait to repot it!

I bought a brown turkey, but am having second thoughts. i posted a pic and the general ideal is it is not brown turkey but no leeds as to anything it possibly could be. very tasty though. and it was expensive. but i got it when i didnt know any better. seeing this and knowing about the mislabled trees all the time makes it a pain. when i sell a tree i have it tagged as what i know it is. i have not reproduced this BT for sale but if i do it will be listed as tasty unknown :)

This explains the reason why there is a major mix up on fig trees. I just came back from talking to members of a major nursery. It seems nurseries get cuttings of unknown rare trees from immigrants. Nurseries know Brown Turkey fig trees are hardy so in order to sell a stock of unknown young trees they stick a common Brown Turkey tag on their trees. So, the tree could be a bland tasting brown turkey or it could be a rare unknow tree like Nero 600M or Valle Negra. So you see, people are not crazy. The fig that grand ma probably had back in the day wasn't a brown turkey. It's not their fault. I think it capitalism's fault! Everybody is trying to make a buck. It's sad! I am so glad my knowledge base about is growing.

Now is a good time for everyone to survey their trees and document if the tips are red or green. Keep this information with your trees for future reference. thanks!

Good news! My 2 Brown Turkey Not has figs on! It won't be long before the verdict! And, these 2 trees are not hardy for my area. One was out all winter and it died in its container but came back. This winter, I will move it indoors.

Well, the jury is out on my 2 Brown Turkey Not fig trees.  Guess what?  They are definately NOT Brown Turkey fig trees!  Let me repeat that!  These 2 trees are NOT Brown Turkey figs!  And they are not Petite Negra or Violete de Bordeaux or Negronne, or Kathleen Black or Black Mission.  I don't know what it is.  Valle Negra?  Maybe....Heck I don't know.  But what I do know is this fig has an incredible taste.  It's very sweet and I am very happy with that!

The figs picked were ripe however I could have waited a few more days.  But its been raining every day since last Friday.  Although, the figs did crack.  They did not split like my Peter's Honey and Black Mission.  Here are a few pictures.  I picked these figs this morning.  There is one picture showing this fig next too my Black Mission NL, again picked today.  THese figs are a dark blue color....darker than my black plums shown in one pic!

Please note:  On these photos, if you want to enlarge them, you're going to have to Right click using your mouse and open them in a new window.  Otherwise they will not enlarge.  If using an IPAD, place your finger on the photo and hold it there, then choose open in new window.  I've done nothing different when I upload photos.  I'm not uploading these using my IPAD.  I'm using a window machine and the photos still won't enlarge.  GO FIGURE!  It's the loading tool Jon uses to upload photos to the forum.

I'm happy these tree did fruit for me.  I knew it wasn't a BT when I bought it.  I am just busting with excitement and joy because the figs taste so freaking good!!!!  Another score!

That is very encouraging. I picked up a "BT" that looks very similar this year. It's big and was very pot-bound. Main stem was about an inch or so in diameter. No fruit this year, but nice leaves that look like your first photos. It was $14 for a 5-gallon fig. If it does well and is something good, great. If not, no huge expenditure on the gamble. We shall see. Looks like you won with yours.

Dennis,

Could that be a Black Italian?  I bought one from a local nursery in Houston that has leaves that look just like that.  Same growth pattern too.  Let me see if I have a close up of the leaves.

Hi Meghan, nope, it's not Black Italian!  I got several of those from my buddy Dalton at Durio Nursery. The leaf patterns do not come anywhere close.  To see the leaf pattern, scroll up to the top.  One of my BIs is taller than me and the figs are jet black and amber inside.  I know it's not BI.  I think its Valle Negra.  Some say it's Nero 600M but I don't have one of those yet.  But the figs have an excellent taste!

Dennis thanks for showing the pictures.
As for your pictures i notice that when mouse is held over them there is no file name for some reason.

I also use windows its an old 98 windows edition and there fine after i resize them for the forum , even others can click on the thumbnail and they enlarge and when one holds there mouse over them a file name shows identifying what is being seen.
Yours do not do this .

Thanks Martin. But, there is nothing I can do until Jon upgrade this web toolbox.

My first thought when I saw your pics was Nero 600, but the odds of that being correct seem pretty high. Glad you like it whatever it is. Neat that y.ou got it as a BT for cheap

Well Dennis you got a deal on that one.  A nice mystery to solve and a great looking fig tree.

Thanks Meghan and crew! Both trees were potted inside whiskey barrels. Come November, they go into the garage. These 2 guys are special!

Looks good, It does resemble Negrone or petite Negri.
