Thanks Cathy,

I ordered one. Hey Kerry, what is the difference of the types? Is New Zealand moss the one we should be using?

Luke,
I don't have experience with the NZ type and just bought a small bale to try it out .
Just wanted to see how it compares to the Mosser Lee brand large bale I bought last year through a nursery supplier.
I was just asking because what Cathy posted here would be a very good price for the NZ moss , if that's what it is.

I sent an email to the seller asking where this moss originates from.
Will post once I hear from them.

Kerry,

While we are talking long fiber sp moss, I wanted to also ask if you are the one that made videos that are on you tube (at least I think that what its called) showing how to start cuttings in plastic cups. Then in second one shows putting cuttings in long fiber moss to root???????? If so they are great, if you didn't post the links yet you should. I would but I don't know how, sorry.

No Luke ,definitely not me posting anything on you tube.
I'm lucky if I manage to remember how to post pics on this forum.
What is the link to that ?

Response from the Amazon.com seller

Hello Cathy!
It is harvested and shipped from Chile (South America).
This sphagnum moss is the most popular sphagnum moss among commercial orchid growers in USA, Taiwan and Japan.

Mosser Lee's Long-Fibered Sphagnum Moss comes from Central Wisconsin.

Wow, that is a good deal. Originally I was hoping to support a WI company but with the price on the SM at the start of this thread, theres no doubt in my mind. If I needed any I'd order from the Amazon seller too!

Just did the math comparing to local price for small batch at Home Depot.  I can get 432 cubic inches (which is .25 cubic feet) for 3.97.  Figure in 7% sales tax and cost is 4.25.  It would take 24 of these to get to 6 cubic feet, so that would cost $102.  The all in price of this deal is $56.50, which is about a 50% discount.  However, for me, to have to buy that much at once, it would probably take years to use it, so I'd prefer to buy the smaller ones.  But it sounds like a good deal for someone who uses a lot of it or has the space to store it indefinitely.

The bale arrived the other day and I had a chance last night to play in it.  It's super compressed, so I tore about an 1" across the bottom off, added some water and it expanded.   Here is a picture of it this morning.  Light, soft and fluffy.  Very pleased with my purchase.

To the others who purchased, what do you think?

I got mine too. It looks like great moss. Better than the last bail I got, which was a larger bail at about the same per cubic foot cost. It had dark areas and roots and sticks in it more than this. Thanks for the tip!

Just finished a block of this stuff.  Excellent moss.  The only negative is it takes a long time to properly divide it.  I know of old posts about using a blender, but that just dosent work for me.

Hi Ed,
I broke a few layers off, laid them in a 5 gal bucket to absorb water for a day and then was able to "fluff" them with no problem.  Not fast but worked.

For me, I take either a small ax or a straight claw hammer. Use the claw of the hammer and have at it. Then you can soak for bout 10 minutes.

Looks like it's no longer in supply on Amazon, but it is still available on their own website (for $6 more), and the shipping [at least to my zip code) is the same.
