Long Neck Yellow 2013

I picked the first two of these from my tree last week and they weren't quite yet fully ripe.  I left the same day to visit family in northern Idaho and returned at 2:30am this morning (18 hours and 923 miles after starting the trip back) and this morning I found several that were very ripe.  This was one of the larger ones, weighing in at about 100 grams (0.22 pounds on my digital scale, need to see if it also weighs in metric).  Flavor was very good and sweet.

After 3 large bites:

I believe that this is the same fig that also goes by the name of Yellow Long Neck, Yellow Long, etc.  George Emerich of Fallbrook reportedly obtained this from UCR before the collection was destroyed and he shared it with Edgar Valdivia who shared it with me.  I believe one of them shared it also with Quail Gardens.  I discussed this earlier this year with Edgar but don't recall precisely what he told me.

Very nice Harvey. Thanks for sharing the history and pics

Long yellow is a nice large fig indeed with great sweet flavor. When issue I had with it is the splitting in rainy seasons and the ants go after it before any other fig.

That looks good. A nice big fig.

Thanks for posting Harvey. I have this and  am now even more excited that some day I too might hold such a big juicy fruit in my palm.

Sounds good and looks good thanks for sharing with us.

Long neck yellow sounds like a new addition to many wish lists...

Armondo, I'm pretty bad when it comes to describing flavors.  I don't know if I've actually had a truly ripe Kadota yet to compare it to.  I tried to think of flavors when I was eating it and nothing came to mind.  I sent my the ripest one last week to Bass so maybe he can be more descriptive.  Today I also ate Panache, Black Mission, Vista, and Monstreuse and they all tasted good but different.  Maybe I had a Jurupa also.  Oh, I also ate a Marabout c. Smyrna when I came down my driveway at 2:30am on my way back from Idaho but it wasn't really ripe enough yet (impatient and it was dark!).

Harvey,
Is your tree in the ground?
I have one in a pot with 2 figs but they need probably a month to ripen and I am way South of you.
Why mine comes so much later? It is a 2 year old one, maybe that is why...

Yes, mine was planted in the ground about three years ago but only received regular irrigation beginning about 14 months ago.  My tree lived the first two years in a pot and it is a vigorous grower.  My days are longer than yours at this time of year so that may also be a factor.  How warm do you get?  We had nine consecutive days over 100F last month but now have cooler than normal weather only in the 90s.  I have been picking some Panache for about two weeks, if that comparison helps.

Wow! Here, in LA we have had in 80-90s for 2 weeks now. Quite cool temperatures, actually.
My Yellow managed to produce humongous leaves, like a dinner plate, but only 2 figs :(
My Panache is still little, it set a few tiny figs for the first time but I am happy to see them anyway.

I am going to repot the Long Yellow this weekend in a 10 gal pot (from 3 now), so it may grow better.
