Long story short...new Portuguese variety discovered locally ?

I was at my monthly iris meeting (Barry Blyth from Australia was the guest speaker). I started a discussion with the Jess, the person across from me regarding plants/gardens in general. He mentioned a friend of his gave him cuttings a few years ago of 2 fig trees, one of which was from Portugal. It was from his home in Point Loma, the friend was selling the house. The new owners cut the fig trees down! grrr... Jess believes he's now the only one with this fig in town.

Anyway this fig is 2-crop, small, black and sweet. He said it was very good. I asked for cuttings so we will see.

Sue

Is it too late to grab the branches?  I hope you save it.  I bet dozens of us would like to grow it.  Maybe there are (or will be) suckers and the people living there will let you take them.

Good luck Sue, It sounds promising. I've got my fingers crossed for you!

Sue,
Interesting news. I look forward to hearing any new information on this fig. Point loma has a pretty good track record of harboring some great varieties. Keep us posted

Bob,

Yes, the mother tree is long gone by several years.

When Jess told me he pruned his tree last year I cringed. I knew he threw out the cuttings. I hope to make a new friend in him for future harvesting. He did say he has a lot of suckers on the tree and he was going to grab some, pot them up and put in his greenhouse for me. Yes, I will of course share when it's available. ;-)

Good luck Sue , I hope you get them. It's so disheartening when people throw those cuttings out. Sounds like a great one.

I bid $50!!!

Oh, this isn't an auction??? LOL

Nice connection Sue. Point Loma is a wonderful place fig hunting and most importantly, fig finding.
