Long yellow fig

This fig is huge.
The first year it fruited it dropped all but two figs. That was due to the tree being root bound. I have repotted it since.
Jon mentions that it matures late, It has a few figs that are about to ripen. I'm keeping this one more day before I pick it.

Bass another light colored one!
Hope you like its taste it looks good from outside.

Bass, interesting that it is ripening for you. Definitely not ripe, yet, here. 5th day in the mid 100s, here, and most the coming week will be likewise, so maybe that will get its attention.

I just picked this fig. It looks a lot different from the earlier crop I picked. As you see it had blushes of red.

Bass,
It must be one baddd tasting Hombre or you would have said how good it was..........right?

Actually it tasted good. I would see even sweeter than the earlier ones. It must be the dry and sunny week we've had.

Thanks Bass

Hug the Kiddos for us!

Looks great Bass

Welcome Cecil, my kids have been enjoying the figs. I got them hooked on figs very early.
Pete, Thanks.

Bass, beautiful figs. My wife, nor my kids would dare touch a fig. They're all mine! YEAH

Does anyone have any pictures of the plant on this one?  I have a Long Yellow growing that Jon sent me.  It has HUGE leaves.

Cobb,

Your post begged my visit this sunny afternoon to San Diego Botanical Garden.  I live very close and the garden which, I believe is home of the "mother tree" and source Jon’s Long Yellow.  I was introduced to Long Yellow at Jon’s Fig Fiesta last September, found it very tasty and am growing this year.

Photos below are of the specimen tree, just weeks out of winter slumber.  I noticed leaves that where shaded were somewhat larger than those in the full sun, also lobes seem to vary in shape slightly.  I hope this helps, happy figging…

BTW..... notice the comment on tree identification about being sweeter in "warm inland locations".  This tree has a direct Pacific Ocean exposure, maybe 1 mile away, and is constantly fanned by cool breezes.

Jack,

Thanks for the nice photos!
The leaves on my Long Yellow are also humongous! With some stretch, one leaf can cover a 5 gal bucket, I think.
Very pretty and healthy looking fig.

The productivity has been so-so so far. 2 figs last year, I hope to see more this year. The tree is about 3 years old.
How big is the tree in the Garden?

Wow, that is a beautiful tree.  I hope Houston is inland enough (I'm sure it's hot enough) for good figs.  My leaves look different, although its still a young plant.  Thank you for getting those great photos.

Wow, Meghan, are you sure it is the same variety?

I trust Jon sent me what it says.  And I know young plants have different leaves than mature plants.  I didn't notice it before, but look at the new leaf coming in.  Its a three lobe like the pictures Bosco posted.

Whoa Meghan……… now that is some fig leaf.   You are sure doing something right.

To tell the truth, this is way over my fig knowledge pay grade to opine on.  Other than to say, that monster is nothing like what I saw or the limited photos in Forum identification page.  I hope that leaf is indicative of the size of fig this tree will produce.  Best of luck……

Igor,

How big is the tree in the Garden?     Would you believe, I got so carried away getting leaf photos; I didn’t shoot the whole tree.   While a little dark, the photo below is one I took this last winter of the fig tree grouping in this garden.  Long Yellow is on the far right.  It is a twin trunk from the base, maybe 30 ft. plus across and 15 ft high.  Also, unlike it’s large Flanders neighbor, it had no breba developing.   I assume that is a characteristic of Long Yellow.

There are four varieties represented in this little planting… Tena, Flanders, Panache and Long Yellow.   Unfortunately, whether planted too close originally or the way they were pruned and maintained, they have all sort of grown into each other.   To my surprise, no evidence of pruning or trimming during this last dormant season.  Short as it was…!
