looking for best fig from Turkey.

there is a new school in town where all the male teachers are turkish. i want to give them a fig tree from turkey.

what is the best variety that can with stand zone 7 winter from turkey?

i don't want BT even if that's from turkey per name sake.

do not PM or email me. please post here. i might be able to trade some cuttings.

Pete,

There a guy on Ebay selling Turkish figs now. Looks like he is from NY area.
There's also someone selling cuttings.

I have a couple but they are buried and don't know anything about them.
I will see later today and if they are within reach I will send one to you. If not then I can send it to you in the Spring time.

rafed,

thanks as always. i'll check out ebay also.

Happy that Rafed is taking care of you, but I really thought BT came from the fact that turkeys are stupid, and brown.  Am I wrong?  Is the Brown Turkey from Turkey?  I seriously doubt it.  I do know that a turkey is really a dumb bird, and a Brown Turkey Fig tastes insipid.

Suzi

suzi,

i doubt BT came from turkey. and turkey the bird is not stupid bird. the stupid ones are the domesticated ones. the wild turkeys are majestic birds. why, even ben franklin suggested that we should have turkey as the national bird before the bald eagle was chosen.

There are a few.  I am growing some now but they are only starters.  I want to test first to make sure no wasp is needed.  May be a year or so before I know for sure.

been crusing the ebay for greek figs. i'm not very good at surfing ebay, but they are mostly cuttings and BT. found 1 Green Greek cuttings, but i think i can get a better deal from durio nursery. what are some greek varieties?

Pete give me the names of the figs Greek ones that your looking for I will look for you I'm always on eBay and if and when I find them I will send you the link

tony, that's the thing. i have no clue what are some good turkish figs. i know what's popular on this forum and that's about it.

"I only ride 'em, I don't know what makes 'em work." OddBall, "Kelly's Heros".

I bought a few figs from a guy outside of Boston last year, as some may know.  He was Greek off the boat. Most of the fig trees I bought from him ended up to be Brown Turkey's. Most notably: Greek Weeping!

Well Pete if you do research and figure out what you want let me know and I'll be sure to search for you that goes for anyone else as well you can pm me some names ill look when I go online I'm not saying I'm the all mighty of finding things but I'm pretty close LOL :)

PS do the Turkish figs or most of them need the wasp to ripen etc ?

dominick,

maybe the person thought anything with "turkey" was turkish figs. lol

Yeah that's thing to him they were variants from Greece to him.

Pete,
Isn't Vasilika Sika a greek fig?

Art,

I think VS is Greek, along with White Greek, and Green Greek. Problem. Is they are not Turkish.

You might need to translate this link, maybe not the best ones but they are some anyways, http://www.incirmucizesi.com/cesit.htm

http://www.academicjournals.org/ajb/PDF/pdf2010/15Nov/Gozlekci.pdf  While this does not name any cultivars prehaps you can contact them and they could help point you towards the direction you like.

Hi Pete,
I don't want to get your hopes up, but I may have hit the jackpot on Turkish figs.
My brother called me today and said he got some cuttings for me. He works for a utility company and the house he was at today had a few fig trees. The guy had a strong accent, hard to understand. Well he said his trees are from Turkey.
I made sure to ask him if he said Brown Turkey. The guy definately said they were from Turkey.
I'm gonna visit him sometime in the next few weeks to get the facts straight. I will let you know.

Art

thanks art, let me know what you find out. maybe we can trade :)

Pete,

My brother just dropped them off. Sorry for the horrible pics. The cuttings are about 4 ft. long. Pretty thick. I will send some cuttings to you.
I will find out the history of them. Worst case scenario, you will have an unknown that you might not have.

Pm me with your address, I don't need anything in return.
