Looking for central arizona

Hello to all F4F members! I am new to this forum and am looking to find anyone else growing figs in north central Arizona (Prescott area). I am tickled to find this group of fig-minded enthusiasts, as I have wanted to grow figs for a long time, but thought they would not grow here (am finding out differently). Thanks for such a great place to share!

Welcome!  We have a few people from AZ but I'm not sure they're near you.  Hopefully a few will chime in.

Hi there Chill. I live in the Phoenix area so my climate is different from yours.

Prescott gets pretty cold in the winter. You can probably still grow figs in the ground up there but they may require winter protection, especially when they are young. I would focus on cold hardy varieties. I would also try to force early dormancy by restricting water in the fall.

Hopefully other growers who live closer to you will chime in. Best luck with growing some nice trees!

Jodi is in your neck of the woods. Welcome!

Welcome to the forum.

What a difference between Phoenix and your town. Your Hardiness Zone is 7b while Phoenix's could be 9a or 9b. Still there are many people successfully growing figs in Zone 7b in other parts of the country, initially with winter protection. Certain varieties once established could do very well in your area. You might have to get the hardy ones if you wish to eventually grow them in the ground.
Over the years, I've seen many established trees in Brooklyn NY (Zone 6B) which is colder than your area.

Hello chilloutquilting. Jodi here in Camp Verde. I'm just learning about figs in the Verde Valley. I'm not sure you can do any in ground in Prescott but I bet you could be successful like a lot of the folks here, growing in containers. Lots of generous people here with their wisdom. I've got 4 trees in ground 2 & 3 years old, 10+ in containers and a figgerator full of cuttings! Welcome to the group. Let me know if you'd like some of my friend Daisy's Cornilio Brown Turkey. Check it out in the topics. ;-)

Welcome to the forum. I am in Arizona way south of you,in Sierra Vista. I would stay with containers until they fill a 5 gallon potThis sring or summer I should've cuttings to help you start out. Larry

So nice to meet you all! I have a couple of Celeste cuttings I am trying to root. Intend to keep in pots for at least a couple of years and store in the shed during winters.would be very interested in buying a few more cuttings of different varieties.Been very cold lately with lows down to 10 F a couple of times.
