LOWE'S FIG TREE ALERT

Lowe's here in Marshall Tx had 5-6 ft, 1" caliber trees for $9.98.  Had Kadotta, Texas Everbearing, Celeste, LSU Purple.  I bought all of the ones here.

Cool. I'll have to go check here later.

I got one from them last year, maybe be the left overs of yours.. it never grew a leaf but did not die completely. I trimmed down to 2 buds and it is still there...hope yours will do better, since you are getting them in early season.

I'm curious if these are left over from last season or if they're beginning to stock plants for 2014?

The Lowes and Home Depot in Wilmington NC just got trees of the truck when I was there yesterday.  Both had Celest and Brown Turkey they were around 4' tall for like $24.00.

These trees here in Marshall came from a nursery about 60 miles west of here (Trees USA Lindale Tx).  They have thousands and in any and all stages of growth.  It isn't a question of leftovers it is simply a new shipment.  There have been fig trees in this Lowe's all year but most are generally 6-8ft and are $19.99.  I would recommend that you check the roots as these I bought are severely root bound and will need upping as soon as possible.

Sounds like very tall ones, I checked our Lowe's in Burbank, all they had was a Brown Turkey but it was $24.00 and it was not even 3'er. I think I'd kep all my tree hights low, like 3-4 feet or max 5 feet, easy to harvest and less space taking.
Another 15 days and the new bare-rootfig trees will be everywhere in market, Home Depot, Lowe's, Osh. The local good Nurseries already starting to bring some in 5 gal backets.

There are a couple nurseries that sell on Craigslist.  They both usually have figs.  Most of their trees are $10.00 for 5 gallon.  This one is in Temecula, so I might trip over there and pick up a Black Mission (which is one I don't have).

BLACK MISSION

BROWN TURKEY == GENOA == BLACK JACK

KODOTA FIG TREES ===AND MORE WITH FRUIT ON THEM RIGHT NOW $10.99

No way of knowing if they are labeled correctly.  Sometimes it's better to wait till summer when they have leaves.  But you need to take a photo of the correct leaf from John's site or here on your smart phone, take it with you to compare.

Every year I scout around to see who's selling figs. Home Depot always carry Brown Turkey and Celestial for only $19.99. And their trees are some of the largest and tallest (5 and 6 foot) which means they've been growing inside a green house for 2 years and pumped with daily fertilizer.

Lowes also carries some. Here in NC they have Brown Turkey, Celeste and sometimes Hardy Chicago. But these trees are tiny litle 10 inch bush. I bought one of these from Lowes last Fall for $3 bucks! I've been giving them away. Trees here have 2 tags, one from lowes and one from the wholesaler. I called the wholesaler and talked to the Southeastern salesrep. I drilled them about their figs. I asked why not sell other varieties of figs and I was told they try to just repeat previous year sales using the same varieties. He said, they are not concerned about the varietiry. He said Lowes just want "Fig". They don't care what they get.

I wish Lowes would sell Magnolia. I'm trying to locate 2 from Lowes. Somebody in Florida or Texas found Magnolia at Lowes. If somebody find them at Lowes, send me a PM.

I got my Violette de Bordeaux at OSH several years ago and it's proven to be true to type.

We must get all the runts up here in PA. The Lowes near me only sells Hardy Chicago trees the largest one was about 2 feet tall. I always check out Home Depot but they never have any fig trees at all.

The Lowes and HomeDepot here only sell Brown Turkey or Texas Everbearing and they are 2-3 ft tall, usually 24.99. So if anyone finds good fig trees at Lowes it must be a local manager's issue.

Hi Dkirtexas,
Are you really speaking of 5-6 ft so 1,50/1m,80 meter ?
I usually pay here 10 € for 30 cm bushy trees - that's what I gave for my "goutte d'or" . The only advantage is that I could have made 6 trees out of it - I made 3 / not enough space for them all and ok I screwed 2 .
As for the left overs, it is not a problem. I bought 2 trees in October, so 2 left overs from April - No one willing to go Ice Crystal ... . I prefer looking at it from the other way : I bought cheaper a tree that was almost a year older .
They nevertheless come root bound, even my small "goutte d'or" was.

The offer is interesting . I wish I could have my hand on them here. Hey newbies (and the others that still have some space left) , time for shopping .
Dkirtexas, you really made a good deal !

Just checked our Lowes.   The have a bunch of BT and celeste.  And a few LSU Purple and Kadota that are 6ft. I might go back and get a kadota when not on lunch break.

You guys are killing me. The only thing at the garden center at Lowes and Home Depot is snow

@jdsfrance - yes 5-6 feet

The deal was so good that I drove 25 minutes over to the Longview store and bought 12 trees there.  They were not quite as developed but were still pretty good being 4-5 feet tall.  It would take me 3 yrs to grow one to that size, especially the caliber.

I wish there had been a better selection, who knows they may all be BT or Celeste but that's okay with me, I never met a fig I didn't like, some more than others maybe, LOL

Stopped by Lowe's today & got 4. They were $10 also!! In Texas.

I also found Kadota, Texas Everbearing, Celeste & Brown Turkey. I think I'm going to try a different Lowe's tomorrow to see if I can find the LSU Purple.

The tallest one was 5'6". Smallest was 4' of the ones I purchased. Happy Happy.

Thank you dkirtexas for the heads up!!

They do look root bound though.

Lowes an HD around here don't carry figs. I've seen assorted berries, apple, peach and others, but no figs.

Hey Jenn, I bet you're glad you came first right?

Now, make sure to label your trees with the correct names. If you have to double label them. Repot the trees to a 5 or 10 gallon pot. Make sure to loosen some of the roots. And don't water too much.

Keep your receipts from Lowes. Why because some nurseries think Brown Turkey and Tex Evb are the same. They are not the same. You should have figs on the Tex Eb in June.

Enjoy your fig!

Snaglpus,

Thanks so much! I plan on doing that this weekend hopefully. I just need to get more soil mix :)

I saw some pots today that I need to go back & get too.
