Lowe's Fig trees on sale ALERT

Lowe's has trees on sale again, not as tall as last time but nice trees.  Celeste, Brown Turkey, Texas Everbearing, Kadota, 3-5 ft tall, severely root bound.  $9.95

OBTW - Texas Everbearing (TEB) is not the same as Brown Turkey! at least not in NE Texas, the difference is most obvious in the difference in the leaves.  I am not saying that it (TEB) is not a Brown Turkey, only that it is not anywhere close to what people around here call Brown Turkey.  It (TEB) is also different from what the grower calls Brown Turkey in this shipment.

This is not a call for a debate, it is not a challenge to what you may or may not believe, it is only a statement of what I see around here.  We can debate whether a Cohiba is better than a Montecristo but not the TEB / BT issue, LOL

I was gonna stop at lowes tomorrow. They've been putting plants out even though we've still had cold weather. Haven't seen any figs yet.

The Lowes down here was loaded on fig trees too.

Don't remind me of that.
I was at a nursery past Saturday, and they had some left overs from last year - so trees that are a year older. The trees were kept in a gh and brought now ouside - so they have between 2 and 4 weeks of head-start ...
The ones of better interest to me were a brunswick for 22€ (still expensive IMHO) and a "rouge de Bordeaux" for 15€ . They had some others like "Ronde de Bordeaux" and "Ice crystal" .
I'm still hunting for place for one of them ... But I don't have any space left ... Bouhouhouhou !

Never bought fig plant from big box stores (no intention) but perhaps good for folks to practice with or get introduced to
the world of figs .

Not that Lowes in CHI or KC carry figs...

I bought a Violette de Bordeaux from Orchard Supply Hardware several years ago and it turned out to be true to type.

Martin, they are pretty good little trees.  Years ago, their (Lowes) trees USE to be large in size.  In Charlotte, they're in tiny bush form about 6 inches tall for $10 bucks.  But back in 2008, Lowes had some very nice 2 foot long Black Mission figs that were excellent.  HD has them too.  Their trees are much older and larger than Lowes.  HD here only carries Celesteial and Brown Turkey.

What I do is, I call the nursery that supplies Lowes and HD their trees.  The tag is on the tree.  What most folks don't know is many of their prize trees came from these large nurseries.  They buy cuttings from local farmers and hobbyist!   The supplier for the Lowes in NC and SC is located in Florida.  I called and talked to the sales guy and the fig guy.  They asked me if they could buy my cuttings!  I just laughed.  I told them they need to make sure their product is legit.  They said, they rely on the farmers and hobbyist for that.  Go figure!

Not here.  I was just there.  $24.95 for a DEAD looking Brown Turkey!!

Suzi

That's a good deal on rootstock (I have a few stubborn rooters this spring).

Ditto what Suzi says, no $10.00 fig trees here either!

I happen to cruise by the our Lowe’s and did a quick pass through the garden section this afternoon.   Brown Turkey and Black Mission only... 5 gallon, 3 – 4 foot tall, nice caliper and vigorous new growth!   All looked very healthy, other than unmistakable signs of FMV.  Price ………..$23.98

8" CH here locally at Lowes, $10. Was going to attempt to use one as root stock for the Skardu cutting I recieved from UCSD. Any thoughts?

I don't graft so I don't know, but it would seem that any well rooted tree would be worth $10 for root stock.
