Lowe's has figs already.

My Lowe's just received their spring shipment.  Outside the building, in 27 degree weather I saw Black Mission figs (dormant).  Also had blackberries, blueberries, and grape plants with leaves.  Seems kind of early.  The prices were $10.98 for the figs, which is a dollar up from last year.

I saw them at home depot last week and its down to about 20 tonight.

Lowes  or HomeDespot don't carey  figs this far north heck :(

The Home Depot in my area had fruit trees, but no figs. I don't remember seeing figs last year either.

I have never seen figs in any stores up here. Walmart gets citrus in from time to time though.

I was ordering a few bare root fruit trees from StarkBrothers, to plant this Spring and I threw in a little potted Hardy Chicago with my order . They deliver in my Zone middle of April.

The Fig was a little over priced, but i have had good luck with fruit trees from them in the past.

I see figs at Canadian Tire in Sault Ste Marie but it is just a few of them and the label says "edible fig" that's it.

Austin I live about 2 hours from starkbros great place and if you can make the trip its well worth it. The have a system set up for dormant plants so you can see even the root systems before you buy. Have never orderd figs from them but everything I have gotten from them I am well satisfied with. They used to have a year garentee that if your plant died within a year call em up and get a free replacement. Don't know if that's still how it is though.

The Home Depot in the Austin area had Brown Turkey several weeks ago. They are nice sized and in 3 gallon containers, but they want 20 bucks. This is more than what I wanted to spend. I ended up with more material to graft than I have roots for. Lowes will have their one gallon trees on sale fot half price by the end of March. I have enough work to keep me busy until then.

Dave they still will replace a tree if it dies like the first year .

I have got fruit the second year from Stark trees .

Two years ago i bought apricote , two in one plum , two in one sweet cherry , nectarine , hardy kiwi , blackberrys , raspberrys , gooses berrys . all doing good .

This year i orderd a plumcot , a pear and another nectarine..........oh and the chicago hardy fig.

I bought bareroot Mission at Lowest for something like $14.95 in December.  I used them for some grafting work.  They are leafed out and happy in my greenhouse.  I had bought some larger potted varieties at Home Depot the week before (Panache, Janice, Brown Turkey, etc.) but they were more expensive even though I talked them into giving me a discount for 'last season" plants.

Whole Foods here gets a shipment each year around easter time  of  2 -3 year figs in 5 gallon pots, they are well fed, very robust looking, but always mislabeled. My collection of unkowns is mainly my inability to resist a $19 fig that is as wide as is tall.

so going to lows is like an x-files tv show ah-dont know what u get....
actually when i went to home depot in the us they had nice fruit trees and good variety but figs are too much for them maybe ....
they had nice big plastic pots for 5$ which in israel are about 25$.....
finally i bought some asparagus plants which show promise .

Timing - two years ago, I got to Lowes at the right time,
last day for the landscaping plants,
they had to make room for Xmas stuff.

Purchased over 1000 plants and trees from the store,
retail prices were $2.98 to $ 129.95,
most were in the $14.98- 34.98 price range.

Paid between 10-25 cents each.
Some I bought to use for myself,
some just for the container and soil
and most were donated to a non profit so they could landscape their property.

5 vanloads filled to the top for under $200   :-)

The Lowe's near me looks like an abandoned building. There's not a single plant outside, just snow and ice. Give it another month and things will start to fill up. They carry figs but only Hardy Chicago, wish they would have different ones.

i think most merchants carry one type they call it black or white
they do not care about specifics ......

This past fall they carried Hardy Chicago.  I bought 2 plants.
I'm wondering if they'll stick to Black Mission this year.

I doubt they will carry Black Mission in my area. Past Spring I asked them if they would get BM in stock, the manager looked it up and said it's not rated for our zone just the Hardy Chicago was. It would be nice if they had a better selection. I'll have to check out a couple of other nearby Lowe's this Spring. Keeping my fingers crossed for more varieties.

All,

Yep, the local Lowes has these Black Mission figs here in Maryland as well. here's a picture of the plant

How does black mission taste on a scale of 1-10 ?  How does it compare to flavor with Hardy Chicago?

Lowes in my area has them too. They are smaller than last years trees.

Frank in regard to your question, it depends on the cultivar of Black Mission. I had 3 of lowes Black Mission years ago. Mine fruited and they were great tasting but you have to let them stay on the tree until they were ultra ripe. Whereas my HC has a very rich flavor, richer than my black mission. But Black Mission NL and Willow St figs were close to a 9 IMHO. Others may disagree and that's ok.

Well, It's a miracle!
After reading it here,
I checked out my local Lowes today!
And what do you know!?!
I now own a 'Black Mission' fig tree!
Tiny little tree though for $10.98!
But, cheaper than last year's HC for $14.98 !!!

Thanks for that info, Dennis.

And congrats, Dan!  Let us know how they taste one day!

I looked at Lowes today.  They had Brown Turkey, LSU purple, Magnolia and one labeled just Ischia.  $6.98
