Edited to report that the event is confirmed.  They ask that anyone with ripe figs they'd like to share bring them along in case there aren't enough at Burden to go around.  Google Burden Plantation Baton Rouge for directions.  Easy access right off of I-10.

Meeting beforehand at Mcdonalds and after at Picadilly.  I encourage everyone to bring their spare rooted cuttings for trade/giving/(selling?).

I'll be hosting a field trip to my home a few miles away for anyone who'd like a look at the Frankenfig after lunch.  Be prepared to be underwhelmed, it mainly just looks like a fig tree. . .

After a hiatus last year, there are plans in the works to have another fig day in 2015.  Dr. Johnson kindly responded to my email:

Yes, tentatively it will be Saturday July 11 from 9 -12. I am just getting things together for this event. I will try to finalize plans next week and get an announcement out to interested groups.

I will pass along any more info I get.

I hope to meet many of you.  Last time I didn't do much socializing, it seemed kind of weird to be walking up and introducing myself as Brackishfigger, AKA that Frankenfig guy, to people I wasn't sure would understand.  I suggest we all wear name tags.

I will bring along the remaining trees that no one claimed in my give away (I only had one taker!) for trade/gifting.

Yay!

What is LSU field day? I am working with 10 LSU varieties. I think it would be great to see where they originated from.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will have many fresh ripe figs. Two years ago the ripe figs were limited. I am really looking forward to tasting a ripe Hollier to see if that fantastic taste was an anomaly of weather or if it is "one of the best". For the unknowing the Fig Field Day hosted by Dr. Charlie Johnson and the LSU staff is three hours of sensory overload. You get to meet fellow fig lovers, Listen to a short presentation on the fig, Ask questions to experts, see the REAL LSU fig trees (at least the ones left there) and for those willing get together afterwards eat lunch after the event. Some of us will also eat breakfast prior to the meet. Bring your cameras and video recorders there is much that you will want to capture. I hope that all of you will come if at all possible. I drive over four hours one way and would not think of missing it. Hope to see all of you there.

True all that, and yet, it's just three hours out in a field, in the mid-summer LA sun, sweating with a bunch of other fig nuts and hearing a brief lecture and Q&A that primarily just confirms everything you already know.  And many of the rows have been removed since the last event.

I can't wait!!

Still no confirmation from Dr. J regarding the date and time.

I am considering hosting afterwards any of you who are interested at my home 3-4 miles away to continue the discussion and have a gander at the Frankenfig, assuming no family obligations.  BYO large cold drinks. . .

If at all possible I'd like to visit with Frankenfigs creator! We need to coordinate all this so everyone has ample time to prepare. I'm sure there is some sort of buffet close to Burden Field. Everyone will need to recharge after three hours "in the field" I promise you that. I know I will as I will have been running since 0300 that morning. Perhaps we could eat, relax and recharge before going to Brackishfiggers.

Prepare to be underwhelmed, I ain't as pretty as I used to be (and that's saying something!).  It's funny how everyone online is a pasty middle-aged white guy like me. . . 'til I meet them!

also, with the tentative date of the field day, and the tentative (but likely) gathering at my home, that's a whole lot of "tentative".  Also is pretty short notice, so I hope as many of you as possible willb e able to make it.

I will post confirmation on both counts asap

Made my plans to come with friends!

Most likely meet at McDonalds by Picadilly for breakfast. It's a little more open than Waffle House!

No No I love Waffle House but last time there were about ten of us and we could not converse easily. I was thinking the seating pattern would be more conversation friendly at McDonalds.

It's all good and actually it's just that I know about the McDonalds there. Any breakfast place Hardee's, BK or..., would probably work. I am partial to Hardees and maybe one is there I just don't know.

That's great Pukzpukz,

Looking forward to meeting you!

The LSU part of the program starts at 0900 and ends at 1200. That's the official program!

The unofficial part is that I will be at McDonalds located at 5464 Essen Lane for breakfast around 0700 - 0715. I will stay there till about 0830 and then drive the few blocks to Burden Field located at 4560 Essen Lane.

After 1200 I will eat lunch at Picadilly located at 5474 Essen Lane which is next door to McDonalds. After lunch Brackishfigger will be showing off Frankenfig. I certainly don't want too miss that. Hope you can make all the activities.

Just a reminder that Dr. Johnson asked everyone to bring ANY (LSU or NOT) ripe figs for others to sample and talk about.

If you have something that is unusual please bring it even if you only have a few. They will be plated and labeled along with the figs they collected for display and sampling. I suppose that if you have an unknown that would be OK and maybe you will get an ID.

The more the better! Hope to see all you there.

If you already know eveything about LSU figs

AND you already have all the LSU figs,

There is still a great reason to attend.

You'll get to meet all of us who do not have them or even know all of them (official and otherwise).

One fair lady is driving over 11 hours just to come see everything and everyone.

Time to pack up and hit the road

For any of you worried about trying drive all over in a strange place he lives very close and the drive is simple. Just a couple turns and you are there. Leaving his house and getting back on I-10/12 is also very easy. I'm also sure you will be able to follow one of us to his house.

See you there!

The event is NOT at LSU campus, but rather the Burden research station on Essen Lane  with the entrance right next to I-10 ont he south side (actually the plantation goes under I-10 and is on both sides.  This is the only privately owned underpass in the entire interstate system, I am told!)

When you enter Burden across the street from the Racetrak(?) gas station, just follow the main road including going over a small wooden bridge, passing several smaller roads, untill 90degree left turn of main road with option to continue straight onto dirt road with field ahead.  Go straight here.  There were signs last time.  I'm not sure when Dr. J will begin his "lecture", but the whole event is very informal.

Can't wait!  With all the rain we've had, I've had a lot of spoiled figs.  And no chance to mow my grass.  I hope to get it mowed this evening to make it presentable for tomorrow's extra field trip!
