Good day, so far it has not been a superb year for figs. But summer just started and I'm thining positive! From all of my trees, I've been picking one or two here and there. The big factor in my area is the weather. One day of full sunshine and then 3 days of hard rain! ARGH!!!
Oh well, at least I am getting some figs! My trees are loaded more than last year. However, my some of my container trees are suffering because this explode of rain and 85 degree heat is making them grow out of their 5 gallon pot. Some, I started repotting and so will have to wait till Fall. But some, just had to be repotted. Found a sale on whiskey barrell, $19 bucks each so I bought 4 more. I just love to see a fig tree in a huge barrel like that!
Anyway, I've been picking figs and taking a few pictures. Due to the loading issue using IPads, I have to fall back on my other camera and manually resize them under 1M. Here are some figs I picked yesterday.
The Improved Brown Turkey was sweet but nothing to jump up and down about. I got plenty more on my tree trying to ripen. LSU Gold was about to explode! It was so soft and truly needed more sun. It was semi-sweet. The suprise was Hunt. Now, this fig was excellent! The same was true with my no name green figs. I think these are LSU Hollier. Pretty confident it is. I can't locate the tag on my tree. SOme critter is starting to bite my metal tags! Hardy Chicago was also excellent. TxEverbearing was also good. I've found that the bird scare tape does work only if the birds can see the tape. Those places where there were no scare tape had half eaten figs. Once I put tape in that area, the bird moved on elsewhere. So the tape does work. You just have to use more of it.
But the grand daddy of them all was Peter's Honey! I did not take a picture of it but let me tell ya! A few years back, Rafed said it was his best fig one year.
Rafed, you were right! Man ole Man are these figs good! With all the rain, we've had, my 2 trees are freaking amazing!!!! One a scale of one to 10 it's hard 9.5! The figs on my tree are larger than a golf ball but man ole man are they crazy amazing!!!! And now, my orchard PH is starting to put out the same quality and taste of my container trees. Man I'm getting ready to get me 4 more these trees! It has taken my in the ground tree 5+ years and is probably 8 years old now but the figs are out of this insane world good! thanks rafed for expressing to me not to give up on this cultivar! Many thanks! And thanks for watching!
