LSU Gold makes my first

Over the past three days, I have picked 5 LSU Gold figs.  Ill see if I can get some photos over the weekend.

Last year was the first productive year for this tree, about a dozen or so figs.  This year they seem to be bigger and much sweeter.  I will get approximately 20 or so figs.

It looks like my sugar fig is a few weeks out.

Bill, how is your Alma doing?  Did it fruit for you last year?  Mine did fruit last year but I was not impressed.  However, this year will be the first year growing it in the ground.  Hopefully it will get better.  If not, I will remove it.

I may have killed my LSU Gold.  Mine is 5 years old and I kept it in a pot for 2 years.  The figs were beautiful but not that sweet.  This year, I planted it in the ground and it has not leafed out or anything.  So, I am going to have to cull it.  I am now looking for a replacement.

So, if anyone reading this forum has a good LSU Gold strain and would like to sell me a 1 gallon tree, let me know.  I am interested.  Send me a PM. Cheers,

Hi Dennis,

Did you check the wood to see if it's still green and all of those kinds of checks?  I'm sure you must have, but you could leave the tree in the soil and see if it sends anything up from the roots?  It seems like many times people think their trees are dead only to have them send up new growth at a later time.

Are LSY Gold trees like the LSU Purples in that they need some age on them for the fruit to taste better?

My potted LSU Gold tree hasn't shown any indication of putting out any figs this year, so I don't know what's going on with it.

Woe is us, eh?  :(

Noss, I checked it 4 weeks ago and its a sad sad story.  I don't even water the tree any more.  I wish I kept it in a pot.

Ho Dennis
I am in Zone 5a with some dead-looking plants in pots (those left in the "some heated" garage) but I am not giving up on them until fall when I will know they have surely give up. You are in Zone 9 and should keep high hope for a surprise of seeing green sometimes but that may need some watering.

I will try to get photos posted for all of my trees.  They are big this year.

My alma was very late, october-november when it ripened.
My sugar fig is about 6 feet by 6 feet  bush.  I can not wait till they start to ripen.

When I planted my figs I amended the soil with generic cat litter (pure clay) and with bark mulch.  I did this to keep the nematodes in check.  If your soil is pure sand you may want to try this.

Dennis, about 5 weeks ago I did not know what to do with my LSU Gold cuttings and suckers. I was root pruning and I had to remove 5 suckers. If by any chance you have not got a replacement by Fall, I should be able to spare 3 cuttings. You got my email.

Dennis, I can send you a small well rooted LSU Gold fig tree for the cost of postage and a shipping box if interested. I will be sending out some other trees to other forum members on Monday.

Noss, the usual problem with LSU Gold is that it sometimes takes a few years before the tree starts producing ANY figs.

Regarding never giving up on figs.......

Today I saw life emerging from the ground where I thought I had lost my Florentine fig to the cold of last winter. I had completely given up on it. And how it was able to survive our severe drought without any water is beyond me. But there it was and I gave it a good drink of water along with some MG fertilizer to get it moving along. I had plans to replace it with my back up tree.....and now it is not needed.

That's good to know, Dan, about the LSU Gold tree.  Is it also a later fig?

Yes, LSU Gold will produce 2 crops in our area.
