LSU Gold Pics update 7/4/10 Picked

Just started to swell yesterday so here IT IS. There are a few showing signs so we will see, not very impressed last season, Sweet but to watery for my taste but again I will report back as this is only second year

7/4/10 Picked Today
Raining again and looked ripe
weight 84 grams= 3 ounces
Ripe not as watery as last season and weighed 7 grams more than the largest of last year as per notes. Very sweet, not much of a seed crunch if any at all, a honey mild nut flavor is best I can do, thin skin did not split even with all the rain. Would probably make a great fig preserve if you had the quantity. I will use as a glaze for meat (pork)this year as I enjoy a fig glaze with some port wine or any good quality wine red or white.

Good looking fig and big. Enjoy it soon.
Your main crop is ahead of my brebas. We have a sunny and warm week ahead after some three plus weeks of cold wet weather and I hope that helps the brebas before the stupid birds drop them to the ground when checking them (or for whatever reason they try to nibble on the hard raw figs).

Way to go Sal!  It won't be long now!  Today I picked one Stella, one Negretta and one Ronde de Bourdeaux.  Stella was the sweetest.  Followed by RdB but one bird got to it just before I could get it.  Negretta had no taste.  I had been watching that RdB for the past 3 days.  It wasn't fulling ripe yet but it had dark read interior.  I must have just missed that bird because earlier the fig was fine.  Now I'm going to bring the rain on the birds!  Let us know how the figs taste soon.  cheers, Dennis

Picked today and updated first post. Hope you all enjoy your 4th of July.

Wow!!! Beautiful! I'll have to send a link to my niece to see your pics. We sent her a LSU Gold fig for Christmas. She just found her fig pushing out some little figlets this month. I'm hoping they will ripen by Yom Kippur.  I was so surprised that it is trying to produce fruit this year.

Thank you for all the pics & your update!!! Can I ask, how old is your LSU Gold?? WOW 84 gram fig!

That fig looks great Sal. I'm sure it'll taste better when the weather is dryer. Congrats!

The little one I got from JR in December is about 3' tall and putting on figlets. He started these last year, so it's maybe a year old. I pinched the top at 3' and it's really starting to branch out.

nhardy This tree was received last year end of July, grew well and gave fruit in Nov-Dec. last year It is a good grower and is now about 6-7ft tall. here is a pic from July 2009. Keep in mind I'm in S. FL

Wow!! That is phenomenal. I hope her fig does as well as your LSU Gold fig. It just blows my mind that you got figs last year on your baby. She is up state from you in Orange Park, FL.

Congrats Sal, how would you rate the LSU Gold compared to your other figs? I Too have an LSU Gold I got last year but it barely grew a foot so far this season.

nhardy seems like most figs are fast growers once established. I'm sure your niece will enjoy this variety. Most of my figs are in pots and I would suggest your niece keep hers potted for first season a least to protect from frost and to establish a good root mass before going in ground. Wish her all the best

Hi Nelson compared to most, my collection is small and still in it's infancy nothing more than 2 yrs old. With that said the 6 LSUG figs I picked so far has been during a rain spell the past 5 days (3 inches)
Cons= they tend to be a little watery but better in that respect compared to last year. Also not much of a seed crunch compared to other varieties which may or may not appeal to some.
Pros= Nice size, thin skin, not prone to splitting and souring, sweet, good flavor and productive. MY Verdict 2 thumbs up and is a keeper for me
Hope you and family are well and give that little one a big kiss from Mickey in FL.
