LSU Late Black 2013

LSU Late Black. Received a potted one gallon in a trade in March 2012 (Thanks Cathy S). Sixteen months and six feet later, a first fig. This fig ripened despite the Noah-esque amount of rain that we have gotten over the past fortnight. As you can see in the photo of the eye, I almost missed it. It was sweet (not as sweet as Celeste), more pasty/jam like, tight eye, and slightly smaller than a golf ball. I like a slight crunch and unfortunately, no crunch at all. I expect future figs to be much better because LSU figs routinely mature well and produce more and better figs just like its brethren.

Looks good and sounds good for a first year fig.  LSU Late Black is a new one for me.  I don't think I have heard of it before can you tell me more about it.

It may be black but it's not that late.  Looks delicious!

So many varieties to learn about!  This one looks very tasty.  =)

Thanks JD for sharing

Thanks Mike.

Goss,
Here are a few of the earlier discussions: DoYouHaveTheLSUBlack? and MoreFigConfusion? (Post #11 of has one of the first pictures that I ever saw of LSU Late Black). A search of the forum will help you learn more or confuse you more.

As noted by Bob, this first fig is not late mid season or even late season and it was definitely main crop. It also looks different than the figs Dan posted on blog [1][2]. So without a vetted history for this fig, I have reservations. I am hoping that other members who are growing this fig will post some pictures of their figs and trees; especially Maj Johnson.

Those look really good.

I suspect these figs will almost dry on the tree because of the size, eye, neck, water content of the figs. Hardy Chicago has similar characteristics. The hypothesis is under test...

JD thanks for the links.   Lot's of good stuff there

Rain is eminent so the testing period came to a close a little earlier than expected. The observation is that they seem to hold on pretty well and taste great. See for yourself:
