LSU Purple Cuttings

Anyone know where I can get LSU Purple fig cuttings?  I want to add these to my growing collection....quess I am becoming adicted....a true "figgy".

Alan, as per another current post on the forum, there is a nursery in Florida that is selling LSU Purple:

http://www.floridahillnursery.com/fig-trees-c-8/ficus-louisiana-purple-lsu-fig-tree-plant-p-412

Since they are propagated by tissue culture this is supposed to minimize risk of FMV.  Sounds like a good option for $6.99.

I just got one from there. The plant is small - but healthy . About 6-7 " tall -caliper was tiny at about 1/8th"

Small figs can grow huge!  That's a really good price for LSU Purple!  My VDB was purchased from a nursery online, and I was surprised at how little it was.  You should see it now!

Suzi

Absolutely and the price was great !

Thanks for the info...I looked at their plants before...they are so very small.  I am not very far away....might be worth a drive.

I was really looking for cuttings but this is certainly a viable alternative.

Alan,

I hate to say this mostly as I am new and don't want to start flames but I think you need a warning.

I would not trust that I would get the variety I actually bought from Florida Hill.  Between the owner going on websites and vouching for his own business while pretending he is simply another hobbyist until he got busted.   Or from the fact he sends out mislabeled plants in the past to such a degree that I don't think it was an accident.     I don't trust the business and would not order from them....that is my personal opinion.

That is reason I am somewhat relunctant to get plants from them.  I have heard the same thing from other sources.  That is why I think it best to start with cuttings.  I am not going to be getting that much of a head start and by the time I realize I don't have what I wanted, it will such a waste and aggrevation.  That is why I am going with cuttings from people on the forum.
I have only been a member a short time, but have been reading it for months.  What a wealth of information.  I usually don't join forums but everyone seems to be very helpful and willing to share.

And it isn't just a he said she said type thing.  Here are the links if you would like to read them.  My name on Garden web is Bamboo_rabbit btw so I was involved in the blueberry thread.  I am also a member of the banana forum though was not involved in that thread.

I bought 2 LSU Purples from Florida Hills and like Patte said, they are real small, and yes they will get bigger but, I would not do it again, regardless of how the ones I bought turn out.  The Tissue Culture method produces a good reproduction but I can get a cutting rooted, up potted and producing 10x faster than watching, watering, protecting this small tree.  If it turns out to be true to type good, but please do something!  It has hardly grown an inch in height and zero in caliber in three months, making them 8-10" tall now.  My cuttings started at the same time are now 24" tall and 3x the caliber, I started with bigger cuttings.

The transaction was fine, exactly as advertised, I just expected faster growth, similar to my cuttings growth, unrealistic expectations on my part.

I'm too old to wait for a tree to grow that slowly, LOL

Florida Hills is also Wellspring on ebay.

Thanks MGGINVA.....seems universal to avoid these guys.....amazing how someone can stay in business.  They can say that it is the "field worker" that is taking the short cuts but experience says that it starts at the top and works down.  In todays world, bad service gets noticed fast and the word gets out.

We have our list of good Ebay trusted sellers.  Maybe we need a DO NOT BUY FROM list?

Suzi

Suzi, I second that motion!

Alan,

I have an extra LSU Purple (unverified) tree that I plan on digging up at the end of this season.  I say it is unverified because I have not gotten figs off of this particular tree.  The cutting I rooted, however, was from a tree which was an offspring of a tree I had before which I had received many years ago from Georgi.  Unless there was a mix up with cuttings, it is LSU Purple.  There is always that chance that cuttings were mixed up though.

If you are interested ping me via the private message.  If anyone else is interested in one, I have a second one I am on the fence about digging up.  You just might be able to twist my arm out of it.

The LSU Purple fig trees that I got from Florida Hill nursery at the beginning of June were about 4" tall. I transplanted them to 3 gal pots after a week or two when they got over the shock of shipping and adjusting to my climate.

They are all doing well now with 2 trees at about 16" and 2 trees at 24".
