These fruit were picked today at the LSU Burden Center orchard. They really didn't impress me very much. I did a terrible job with the pictures, as I didn't capture the split eye on either fruit, but all of the nearly ripe figs on the tree were beginning to split. On sweetness I give this fig a 5 and on flavor I give it a 6 (out of 10). The flavor was quite unique, and different from any fig I've tasted, very hard to describe, but not "figgy".

Was there considerable rain last couple days/weeks?

Yes the weather has been dry since Monday, but before that it rained 3-4 days a week for a couple of weeks.  And this week the humidity was through the roof.

cal, next time you take an unauthorized midnight stroll through the orchard give me a call.  I know the local constabulary and may be of aid if we get caught, plus I am strong like bull and can help carry the booty, I mean the "fig branches we found on the ground". . .

Haha, thanks for the backup brackishfigger, but I actually emailed Dr. Charlie to get permission to go try this fig.  He told me to come back and try it in a few weeks during the LSU fig day.

Cal, did you find any other interesting figs that ripened while you were there.  Did you hit the St Gabriel site.

Gene,
I slipped in there during my lunch break, so no i didn't visit the st. Gabriel site. I was able to try champagne and it was impressive. The birds and bugs are hitting them pretty hard right now, so it was skin pickings.

Steve,
As a fan of lsu gold as a good honey fig, I take offense...lol
I do think this fig shares some bad traits of LSU gold but without its best quality - high sugar content.
It should be said that the quality of Scott's black should not be judged solely on my experience today. The fig was likely watered down from excessive rain, and the unique flavor that I wasn't crazy about may really appeal to others.

Yep! That's the ticket. It's coming back to me. 

I remember it well. Yes he said we could come back!
