LSU Tiger

Today I picked my first LSU Tiger fig ever. It's a beautiful fig, looking much like a Celeste only larger. It weighted a whopping 78 grams. It's taste was much like Celeste but not quite as rich. Of course we had a 2 inch rain fall yesterday and 2 1/2 inches today. I picked it right after today's rain rather than risk leaving it overnight.
It was fully ripe and sweet. I'm looking to picking more to further evaluate it's taste.

Celeste on left, Tiger in middle, and Conadria on right.
Celeste 29 grams, Tiger 78 grams, Conadria 93 grams.

Can't wait for my Tiger after seeing your pics, they look great!

Very nice, Gene. Your trees are way ahead of my Celeste and Conadria (I don't have an LSU Tiger). The only figs to ripen yet in my yard this year are a few Brown Turkey brebas. I would have thought some of the others would be coming along quicker since it's been well over 100 degrees, but all of the fruits are still small and hard. Maybe it's because my tree are still pretty young?

Gene - my Celeste looked very different from yours!  Is yours a breba or main crop?

Mine was a breba.

I checked my tree today and the rest of the figs look the same - green and hard.  The tag says they ripen mid June - July.  I am waiting impatiently. lol

JoAnn, I don't think that's a Celeste you have pictured. It looks more like a Violette de Bourdeaux or Negronne. If it is, you're in luck as it's one of the better figs out there.

My fig is a main crop as my tree has never produced any brebas.

Thanks Ken. My Conadria were the first to ripen followed by China White, Celsete, and now Tiger. I got one ripe fig from my Cajun Gold yesterday and look forward to many more.

It's going to be a long, tortuous season looking at everyone's yummy looking ripe figs they are picking and tasting... Can't wait till mine are old enough to produce. :)

Keep the pictures coming....

Gina if you were a little closer I'd gladly share some with you, but being that you live almost in fig paradise, you'll have to improvise on your own.

Gene, my brother in Malaysia says LSU Tiger & Conadria has very good taste. He says it is better tasting than many figs he has.

You could always put it in your tank ;)

Noss, "Eye of the Tiger" 1982 by Survivor, also theme song of "Rocky III".

The best I can describe it now it "Celeste like".

Not sure about your Tiger, I will check all my little trees next week.

Jo ann's fig looked awesome. I hope to have one like that one day. I currently have failed to killl my Negonne cutting so there is hope.

Gina I feel your pain although I do have a few Breba (<20) that I may get to eat.

I picked another Tiger today. It weighted 95 grams or 3.35 ounces, what a fig. It was better flavored than the first one even though we had 5 inches of rain in the last 2 1/2 days. I wanted to leave it on the tree until dead ripe but the rains won't allow that. The skin was already starting to deteriorate and it would have spoil before it got much riper. I hope we get some dry weather so I can let one get really ripe and see if it taste like a very ripe Celeste. Ultra ripe Celeste in dry weather are like candy.
I didn't get a picture of the inside, the wife and I slurped it down too fast.

Gene,
Wherever did you find your LSU Tiger....I have been looking for a source for some cuttings but have not found any yet.  I am trying my best not to import from California due to fig virus....I have enough problems with nematodes in Florida as it is...don't need another malady to deal with.

I am in central Florida and just starting out in fig-mania.  Any advice to offer a newbee?

Thanks..Alan

what a beauty! yummy looking too.

Alan, I will have many cuttings of LSU Tiger to share as soon as the tree goes dormant. The cuttings of my tree came directly from LSU via a friend who rooted it for me.
