LSU Tiger

I'm super excited for these to ripen.  This was the best tasting fig I had last year when it was a first year tree.  This year it's in ground and has about a dozen figs.

James I'm excited for you. Last year I didn't get to eat one of the 50 or so that were on my tree. They all split and soured and that also happened the year before that. As I stated before, I almost dug it out but decided to give it a fair chance at a good dry year. Well this was the year, and the figs are great. They have a little of the Celeste fig taste but a little milder and sweet that finish with a light acid touch. Very good. You will be very happy when they ripen. We had hard rain two days in a row (1 3/4" and 1") and no signs of splitting and not watered down.

Here's the first one that starting to ripen.  I noticed a few days ago that it turned from green to yellow.  Now it's starting to darken. And it's a whopper!

The eye wasn't open like this last year when it was a first year tree, nor did they darken like this.  Can't wait to taste it!  Maybe a few more days, if the birds don't see it.  I need some of those organza bags!!

I'm in the same boat as you james, as far as the tiger goes.  Last year mines was in a pot and this year is its first year in ground and the figs were way better. Too bad my tiger is done for the year.

That's a great looking fig. I passed up on LSU Tiger at a local nursery this past spring. They had small plants for $8.99 each. I wasn't too sure about this variety at the time so I didn't pull the trigger. I'm kind of regretting that now though! Unfortunately I've just about ran out of room and my new yard will be choked full of plants at this point. I'm gonna have to figure out how to graft figs because the more I hang out on this site the more varieties I wish I had room for.

Fig looks good. Hopefully the mockingbirds won't beat you to it.

Very nice looking fruit there..... Can't wait to see my tree growing and baring fruit also.......

Will grow any fig tree that can grow in my country

I ordered some from amazon, but they are coming from China and apparently are on a slow boat..  Gonna go to Party City today to see if they have any.

The one above tasted pretty good. But not as good as I remembered last year.

A mockingbird got two good LSU Tigers this morning that were almost ripe.  One completely gone and one with a good sized hole in it.  I ate the part he didn't. It was AWESOME.  The best one I've had this year.  I'm going on vacation next week, so hopefully I'll have several ripened and protected by the time we come back.

James, glad to hear your good report on LSU Tiger, I'm looking forward to eating some this season. Shipments from China have typically taken 2 weeks to a month for me, hope they arrive in time to protect your figs.

James, I ordered mine from ebay and they came within 5-7 days. Might have been sooner.

I picked up 48 bags at Party City.  The figs shall be protected!

Rob, you know you can grow more than one variety in one whole. I forget the term for it but it is a common, simple solution to the space issue. Just plant the two figs about 18 inches apart and slightly angle the trunks away from each other. You might also want to take into account the direction of the sun so that fruit on both get enough, but in your zone that may not be such an issue since your summers are long.

I've heard of "take out" food, but this is ridiculous.

I just bagged the figs this morning with Organza bags.. I found this one hanging on the fence right next to the fig forest.

Hi Dallasfigs,
For me, the most important, is getting the figs out of sight of the pests.
I'm using a cloth ( pieces of an old dark brown shirt I had), and for now with success.
I wait for the fig to be almost ripe, and then I put a piece of cloth other the fruit, this way it can ripe in the sun and stay untouched till fully ripe.

Aloha, James.  Just happened to me too, so I know how you feel.  Have you considered using a plastic water bottle-type protection?   Igor (Greenfig) mentioned it to me in a post.  Sounds promising.  You might want to give it a try.
