LSU Tiger (Not?)- omg it's good!

This LSU Tiger is the only survivor of it's kind from boot camp this past winter.  Seems that everything with an "LSU" label was very sensitive when coming out of the humidity bin.  I had to baby this one till it finally stopped wilting outside the bin.

It has been, by far, the most aggressive grower/producer.  While my RdB put on about 5ft of new growth from the cutting in 6 months time, this one had 3 main branches from the cutting and each one is over 3ft.  It currently has about 20 figs on it of various stages.

The one below turned yellow a few days ago and I've been dying to pick it.  It had some very faint strips just as it was turning, but you can't really see them now.  I think it could have used another day, but it's raining heavy (and the tree was knocked over from wind), so I went ahead and picked it.

The inside is mostly amber colored, with a strip of red (Tiger's Blood?) through the center. I really wasn't expecting much from the flavor for a 1st year tree....but...

This is, hands down, the best fig I've ever tasted.  Light and sweet and juicy.  Just melted in the mouth.  I just busted out laughing because I couldn't imaging how good it was.  My family will be lucky if they get any of the rest!

Well done James, congrats.

OK James, you have built this one up pretty good. I have one (1) little fig  on my little tree and it is almost ripe.
Soooo, do I need to put an armed guard out until it is ready?

LMAO Mike!

I'm sure it tasted good, but it's not an LSU Tiger

It does seem to be off in color, could you have mislabeled accidentally?

thanks for the taste report, james.

Way to go James...enjoy.

The inside of my LSU Tiger looks more like the ones in the link posted by Mike.  I can't believe I didn't save a picture of the outside of mine but I can't find one.  However, I do remember that it was a darker fig.  I don't remember there being any stripes tho.  It was just more of a light brownish color, best I can remember.  I guess I'll have to wait till next year to know for sure.

James, whatever yours turns out to be, I want cuttings if it's that good.  =)

It was a cutting I got from Jon last winter.  If it's not LSU Tiger, it has to be one of these, but I'm pretty darn sure they were not mixed up.  I wrote the name and number on the twigs as I unwrapped them.

  E835  LSU Tiger

  B927  Texas Blue Giant

B2421  White Texas Everbearing

B2706  Panache

B3027  Conadria  sub 2702

The only other one of these it could possibly be is Conadria.

It's probably the White Texas overbearing or the conadria then..

Whatever it is if it tasted good then that's the main thing. I bet that Texas heat helps to make the figs taste even better.

Sounds like a keeper.

My guess is that it's more likely the White Texas Everbearing since Conadria is more yellow/green with a medium red center.

I posted some leaf pictures in the OP.  It doesn't seem the same as my other White Texas Everbearing, which had much slower growth, and the center of the ripe figs were very red on those and the outer skin was greener where these are yellow.  Also, the leaves don't look the same.  While this one does have some very large leaves, they have much more defined lobes than the WTE.   Nor did they taste anywhere near the same.  This one was very sweet where the WTE was just a hint of sweet.

Here's the link to my WTE.

So that leaves Conadria, or it was simple mislabeled and it's something completely different.

Regardless, it's still the best fig I've tasted yet (in my limited experience), so it's a definite keeper! :)

James me thinks me answered too quickly. Now that I looked at the last pic you posted it does look more like Conadria with the typical yellow coloring. I checked out Jon's variety page and he shows how the center varies from medium red to a lighter color so I'm changing my guess to Conadria. Either way what's in a name as long as it's good tasting that's the difference in keeping it or pitching it. My bet is your keeping it :)

@xxx, your dark fig don't look like LSU Tiger fig. Its a good looking fig and if it taste good, congrats. I have
mislabeled figs too and managed to solve a mislabled one last week when both trees ripen.

James,
From your attached leaf pictures, you can probably eliminate Conadria.
Good Luck

I think this may be LSU Tiger after all, but just wasn't ripe yet. There's another one that's now turning a little darker like in the pictures from post #8. I'm trying to keep myself from picking it yet.

I'm sure you did pick it early.  And with the rain it probably swelled before it was able to full ripen and change colors.  Both of my Bryant Dark figs went through that with the rain over the weekend.

If you thought that was good wait till you get one properly ripened!

No matter what, it sounds like a keeper!  =)

Does this one look more like LSU Tiger?  I let it stay on longer and it did darken a little.  The inside was more uniform golden color.  Similar to other LSU Tiger's I've seen.  I've included the leaf again, but with a scale this time to show how massive it is.  And that's not the largest leaf.  There's one that about 2" wider.

Maybe it is LSU Tiger afterall, but since it's immature, the figs just don't quite turn out the way they normally would?

This is in a 5gal bucket SIP containter and it drikns at least 1.5 gallons of water a day.  The sip is empty every morning.  I'm going to put this in the ground next spring.

1st picture was night before last.
The other 3 are this evening.

James,

I would agree with Pete, leaves do not match my Conadria either.  Could possibly be that it is none of what you think it may be.
