Ma Si Yi - China Fig

Name:
“Ma Si Yi” was originally from U.S.A.  This variety was brought in to Japane about 100 year ago by Kohjiro Masui, and then it was imported to China.  It was called Masui Dauphine in Japane.  The “Ma Si Yi” sounds similar to Masui, so that is where the name comes from.

Description:
The “Ma Si Yi” produces both breba and main crop, but it is growing mainly for main crop.  The large purple brownish fig ripens between August ~ November.  When it ripens, the center is red color pulp.  This variety is not cold tolerant, so it is recommended to growing in southern part of China.

Few online sources suggest “Ma Si Yi” / Masui Dauphine might be CA Brown Turkey or early California Smyrna fig.
I am glad that this variety is named from the original source, not like some varieties which names do not provide any clue to trace back to the origin.

pyxistort@ : You are familiar as China fig very much, so I thought you are overseas chinese. :)

xxx,
I don't know much about China figs, so I look through all possible information about those fig varieties.  Since I have done the research, I just post it to share with everyone.

and we thank  you . . . .

Scott: yes, that's great info. I am certain you were right that this is Masui Dauphine, and the Chinese name is just the pronounciation of the English name. Other varieties are more difficult to trace.

Check eBay, there is a seller from China who sells the figs from there. I think his price is $10 per cutting with $1 or 2 for extra

I had jolly tiger that reverts to its original state which is supposed to be masui dauphin. So I took cuttings of the non verigated branches. So far no variegation on them and produce very large dark fruit, but they spoiled quickly in the rain. I'll have to see how they do this year.
