Made fig leaf tea for the first time tonight

I grabbed a large leaf and a small leaf from my tree tonight.  Rinsed it, cut the stems, and chopped it up.  I used my coffee maker for the hot water.  Filled it to the 4 cup mark and poured it over the chopped fig leaves in the french press.  I let it sit for about 18 minutes.  It turned into a light caramel color.
I thought it was pretty good.  Others mentioned a nutty flavor, which I can agree on.  My wife and I agreed it tasted very fresh.  A hint of grassy flavor, but I'd say it tasted similar to an herbal tea.  I'd definitely make it again.  I added a bit of honey half way through, but I almost prefer it without.  Great way to maximize the use of a fig tree!
The last pic shows the color after about 5 minutes.  It ended up being darker after 18 minutes.  Sorry I didn't get a pic of the final color.

I'd like to add that next time, I'll probably reduce the water by 1/3rd to get more flavor.  It will still fill up a large coffee cup.
Also, some health benefits from fig tea...

Home Remedies using fig leaves:

- Bronchitis - Place two to three fig leaves in a half liter of water with some piloncillo and bring to boil. Let the water boil for 15 minutes and then remove the leaves and drink the tea.

What is Piloncillo?

- Cardiovascular and Cancer patients: Try drinking some freshly made fig leaf tea. Also, eat some fresh figs daily.

- Genital warts - Take one of the fig leaves and apply the milk or sap from the leaf to the affected areas.

- Hemorrhoid - Place two or three of the leaves in one liter of water and bring to boil. Boil for at least 15 minutes. Remove from the fire and let the pot cool. Remove the leaves from the tea and use as a sitz bath or apply to the affected areas.

- Liver cirrhosis - Take 4 leaves, wash them thoroughly and pound them with any type of sugar candy. Fill a medium glass with water and drink this twice a day.

- Lower blood pressure - Place 3 fig leaves in half liter of water. Boil for 15 minutes and drink daily.

- Ringworm - Cut open a leaf and take the milk or sap. Rub on the ringworm. This procedure works immediately.

- Scalp fungal infections, warts and boils - Follow the above directions.

- Shingles: Place three to four fig leaves in 2 cups of water. Boil for a few minutes, let cool and remove the leaves. Take a wash cloth and dip in the water and apply to the affected area.

- Ulcers - Every day chew two fig leaves and swallow the whole leaf. People with advanced ulcers should do this in the morning on an empty stomach.

Do you need to toast or steam the leaves first, like with regular tea?

That would be great if those remedies worked, but I'm skeptical. Any science behind those claims? A few too many claims.

That's great info - Thanks!

There's several ways to make it.  I found the simplest way.  Not sure about toasting or steaming it.
I don't know how credible the claims are either.

the best leaves for tea is at the end of the season when the leaves turn yellow.

i've just gotta try this. thanks, frank.

This is fantastic news Frank, thank you so much. I will be trying them in our green smoothies.

What type of tree did you get your leaves from frank?

This was from my unknown 'Carini' tree.

Frank,

Did you see latex ooze from the chopped leaves? Did it dissolve in the water? Did the greenness of the leaf diminish as it steeped?

Dale,

Very little.  Not enough to concern me.  I've had this tea concoction 3 or 4 times without any ill effects.

Hi Frank & all,

Can we use figs leaves as the ordinay tea, ie tea powder and kept long time

hi Frank ....thanks for your information.i have tasted mine just added with some brown sugar, the aroma is similiar to roasted coconut .delicious

Frank-

Thanks for the interesting thread.

Past postings on the Garden Web Fig Forum....recipes for Fig-Leaf teas:   recommend using clean, yellowed-leaves.  Then, the leaves are dehydrated, crumbled then brewed for teas, Tisanes, concoctions, etc.  Dried, yellow leaves, it has been said, smell and taste (?)  like toasted coconut when brewed.  Also recommend, drying the green leaves for teas.

Blanched fig leaves can also be substituted for Grape Leaves when making Greek-style, stuffed "Grape Leaves".....also good for wrapping around small pieces of meat, chicken, fish, etc. then steaming, baking, broiling....

There are some who also claim fig leaves may have a laxative effect.

Frank....(the other one from The Bronx)

Thank you for the information...........wonderful.
