Madeleine Des Deux Saisons 2014-07-19

This is not a beautiful looking fig.  But my Madeleine Des Deux Saisons has about 7 breba on it this year, and this was the first to ripen of all my trees.  (Peter's Honey is not far behind... also lots of breba).  This is also the first fig I've tasted off of this tree (a third year tree... about 2.5 years old).  I have to say, it's much better tasting than you'd expect from the look of it.  The flesh is mildly sweet and pleasant tasting.  Kind of "pear-like" in its sweetness (comparing to a Bartlett pear).  <edit:  though not the juiciest ripest Bartlett.  :-)>    Not overly impressive overall, but way better than its appearance would suggest.  And way better than regular brown turkey (though English Brown Turkey is better... just unfortunate that that variety has BT in its name).  I'd rate this fig at a 5 and a half or 6 out of 10.  Some say it's the same as Angelique, but I'm not so sure of that.  Here are pictures:

(looks ugly, but it was moist, soft, and sweet with a pleasant taste overall)

Glad you enjoyed it.

Looks good. I've been considering this one for a future acquisition.

Very nice

Mike, we pretty much agree on this one. I disliked it so much it no longer resides here. Mine was a 4th year tree in a 15 gal pot.

I personally do not care about looks or names, it's all about taste.

All:  thanks for the comments.

I'd agree that it's mostly about the taste.  And the taste of this one is pleasant enough that I'm planning to give it another year or two to see how it does here.  The taste may change some as the tree matures.

But for me, other characteristics matter too.  Looks don't matter a huge amount for fruit, at least within certain bounds.  (Lest someone come up with an extreme example).  But productivity, amount of care/maintenance required, suitability for this climate, disease resistance... those sorts of things matter too.  Though I think this fig isn't particularly attractive (especially with that black blotch that looks like rot but was really just a scar), that doesn't put me off of it.  Overall for my sensibilities, the jury is still out on this variety for a year or two (here, in my yard, I mean).  Pleasant enough, but too soon to tell if it's a long term keeper.

Mike

I agree on the other characteristics, thanks. Keep us updated when the next round is ready for the taste test.
