Main crop & brebas crop

Hi Everyone,
Being a newbie, I was told whatever figs above leaves should be main crop from last year, whatever figs below leaves are brebas from this year and are on the way to ripen. I checked with my two fig trees that I potted them in containers last July showing all figs are above leaves and none of them are below leaves. Because they are the second year, those figs that are producing hopefully will be ripen in Sept. My concerns are :

1) Main crop will be ripen to eat before fall or not ?

2) Brebas have better chance to ripen before fall ?

3) What happen if no brebas ?

Tks

Getting brebas are a hit and miss.  You may get them, or you may not.  Most people place their odds on getting a nice main crop, as they're more reliable.
I don't know what zone you are in, but for zone 7, any figs that appear after late July most likely won't ripen before the cold weather hits.
Brebas usually ripen in June - Aug.  This is assuming figs began forming in April/May.

Also, not all fig varieties produce brebas.  Some produce tons of brebas (i.e. desert king), some only a few and some (i.e. unifera type) none.

What varieties have you got?

Hi Frank : Actually I am from Vancouver, Canada (west coast) All figs are formed in June and hope that they will ripen before end Sept as our fall usually begin in end Oct and early Nov and seldom get freeze till Dec/January.

Hi PIno : I have Black Mission & Desert King and both potted in large containers. I got ripen figs from Black Mission last August (first year) and now (second year) got a little more figs than last year and hope will be ripen before end Sept.

Desert King I bought last July with no figs, this year (second year) got abt 16 figs on the way to be ripen hopefully by end Sept. Desert King is very tall (abt 10 ft) with a lot of your branches from the trunk all the way up to the top. Should I cut off the lower branches from the trunk up to the middle trunk as per photo enclosed?Desert King (Copy).JPG

Breba and main crop figs:

[FP538-13]

Breba form on last years growth, which is BELOW the leaves on THIS years growth. Brebas ripen earlier. Your ability t ripen main crop figs is dependent on your climate: length of season and amount of sun and heat. Young plants tend to ripen fruit later, and as they mature, the fruit will ripen somewhat earlier.

Hi Pitangadiego, Thanks for an image showing main crop and breba figs. Which variety does not concern much about this issue which variety does do you know about ? Also it will take how long to be matured to get an idea. Thanks................

Brebas, here, get ripe in June or early July. The same brebas in Portland would ripen probably around Sept 1. It all depends on your climate.

Hi Pitangadiego. Noted with many thanks.

Any suggestion about removing all leaves from the lower part of trunk as mentioned. Do it now or wait till dormancy ?
