The breba crop on Santa Cruz fell off, im going to nip the bud tip soon and see if these fall also.
We have been getting a lot of rain this season and figs like it but i mulch grass when i cut our near 1/ 2 acreand  its a pain cutting every 3 days or so to keep in check with all this rain.

Beautiful Martin I'm jealous also I do not have the first fig showing color yet. What the heck is going on Chicago is getting ripe figs and S Florida nothing at least I'm Not  LOL.  I need to go out and talk to those trees and find out what is going on. ;o)

Thank you Martin.  These are fantastic pictures and greatly enjoyed.

Your VioletdeBordeux looks especially healthy.  Mine is growing pretty well but clearly has FMV.  How do you keep yours looking so healthy?

Hope you are enjoying ripe figs soon.

Best wishes.

Nice pics Martin ,I like the color of your VdB, my Martin`s unknow figlets start showing color.
Sal ,this year so far I think around Chicago been very promising weather for figs ,hot ,rainy etc,. and we don`t have to fihgt with aligators and snakes :)

Hi Sal
these are real young and should ripen around first week of September give or take a week.
Sal you mention you need to talk to your trees, Sal they won't listen.
You have to sing to them they like that or gently running water.
They like the song " thats Amore"  : )

John my VdB may look healthy in that picture but its not and has a good classic case of FmV, it has many deformed leaves and the spotting of chylorphyl loss on leaves. Despite that like yours it a very strong grower and does not slow down because of the FmV.

Remis , oh gosh im glad we dont have gators in yard or snakes as i would be always on the run, the darn occasional wasp keeps me on my toes!

Martin I will take your advice and set my disc player out. I started singing to them and the leaves started to wilt. I did not inherit my dad's voice that's for sure. I think mine have been set back from root pruning as no brebas on most other than my in ground one but even that one has not ripened any as of yet.
Remis I'm a big Gator fan but not of alligators. Looks like my Gators are going to lose in the CWS tonight to the dreaded Noels. As far as snakes go I really don't like them either but I do not disturb the good ones that I occasionally spot in my yard mostly black racers and seen a corn snake. We had a Coral snake in my Mother in Laws pool that brushed up on me it was the real deal as I took photos and verified the stripes it did not bite me and I got it out and well that one I did put to rest.

Martin,

Great looking figs. Nice color on the red figs. It stands out with the green in the back.

Martin I did not realize that the VDB changes color that far in advance from ripening does it swell when it changes color and then again before ripening or just before ripening. I'm glad you posted that info as this will be the first year hopefully for a ripe VDB for me

Sal

Thanks Rafed , it is a nice change from looking at all the other figs which are green at this point.

Sal, these will grow to a certain size during this summer then hold that certain size for a while, come late august early September they start to turn darker, then they swell and get ready to eat when they get hangmans neck and come off tree with a gentle twist useing forefinger and thumb.

This blurry picture from last season June 30th for example that there about the same maybe a week difference at this point.

Here is  picture from last season of VdB that turned darker about a week away from getting ripe.

Then inside of fig when picked.

The tree was 2 full seasons old at that point and not mature , this season they should taste a little better as tree starts to get a little more mature.

One thing i like to mention is last season was very cool here and not ideal for figs, this season is much better and im thinking the figs should taste better with more heat and perhaps ripen a week or two earlier if we have warmer summer and lots of sunny days.

Hope this all makes sense to those who read this.  ; )

Last seasons pictures for example of same tree.

Martin thanks for the info, my collection is still small and I'm not familiar as of yet as to all the subtleties of the different varieties. The few that I have, show color swell and ripen in a short amount of days later 10-14. here are some pics of my VDB today and most of the family ;) The VDB is far left gray pot last picture

Sal

Sal thanks for posting picture.
If you do not mind where did you purchase your Viloet de Bordeaux. Mine came from Edible Landscaping as a violet de bordeaux on tag.
If yours came from same source i wonder if its the climate difference we have that your figs are green at this point.
By the way your uncle Sals Sal (if i may call it that) is doing fine in full sun starting to pick up a little bit now with warmer weather we are having,  i look forward to next season for it to put on some figs and get a little taste of whats to come in future seasons.
Things grow a little slow here Sal.   ; )

Your plants look wonderful by the way.

Martin Mine was purchased on ebay from a forum member the tag is el's So should be same I would think I acquired this in August 2009 slow to take of but when it did it put on some nice growth last year and figs which just fell off in Dec. Even though It was in 3 gal pot I did root prune a bit and went up to 20 gal tub that you see Only my opinion but I think it diverted more energy to roots at first because of bigger pot and fruit set was delayed this applies to most of mine as I did same. This is just my Opinion and I'm no expert. I noticed this with others if I pot up they are at stand still for a while and then just take off with growth. This observation did not apply to my SAL C as that had a well established root system even in the small styro container and just took off from day 1. Thanks Gorgi Again it now has 7 figs on it an I think it will hold all

Glad to hear that blk fig is doing well it is not a fast grower  and tends to be compact in container which is great IMHO more like BMVS from my observation but not the same Variety that I can tell. It is very prolific and if you don't get fruit this year I assure you will next season.

Yes i look forward to the figs from Sals Sal next season.
Next season it would be nice to talk again about same subject Sal and our VdB and compare figs its fun.

Hey Martin thanks for posting those pics, I didnt realize the vdb starts to turn reddish that early on cant wait for my plants to start producing figs.

I noticed several of the Celestes beginning to ripen.  They're kind of dry even though I've been watering them every day it hasn't rained, for a good two-three hours.  It doesn't seem to help.  It's as though they need to be rained on rather than just watered from the ground.

I picked and ate one of the figs that looked like it was ripening but felt like it didn't have any juice in it.  It tasted like my Grandma's brown turkeys used to taste, that special fig taste, but not as sweet.  I was just going to cut it open to see what it looked like inside, but then tasted it.
