Main Street Purple fig

If you would have told me, I would be eating figs in November, I would laugh at you! Well, here is a fig that I picked yesterday. It was sweet and pretty good. And yes Martin, this is a dark fig. I got the tree in late October from a forum member. The tree came with green figs on it. I repotted it gave it a shot of my special tea and left in the shade. I didn't think the figs would ripen but here is one that did. We've had goldilocks weather and now it's starting to get cold at night. And even though with this crazy weather, I'm still picking ripe figs! Who knew?

This fig is an unknown black fig and mark my word, it's going to be one of the best! For now, its called Main Street Purple, but next year I'm gonna give it a better name. Here are a few pictures of my Main Street Purple. Enjoy,

Nice fig Dennis.  Congrats on the late fall, and getting a ripe one this late in the year.  Of course, you're way down there in the south, North Carolina.  I wouldn't have believed November was possible either, but I got three Aubique Petite figs ripened (on an outdoor tree, no less) on 11/1.  That's up here in the north:  central NY state.  I've got to agree with you -- I'd have never believed November was possible here, a really exceptional fall.  (Of course now it's gotten way too cold, and the last stragglers are ripening on the indoor trees now).

What do the leaves look like?  The fig looks a lot like some of the Mt Etna types.

Good that you like it after all thats all that matters !

Congratulations.  It looks like a wonderful fig that should do very well in this climate.

Very nice, wonderful color..

Congratulations.  It does look good.

Thanks guys. I got this figs from KK. The darn tree still has figs on!!!!!!!! But we got 30 degree nights now and the leaves are curled so, the figs that are on will probably fall off. I'll let KK post leaf pattern of the tree. I don't feel right doing that.

When I picked the fig. I really didn't think it was going to be good. So, I didn't take the picture in the best of light and I wasn't expecting it to be good. But I tell you this, I will winterize this tree and keep close eye on it next year. But I am happy to add this fig to my collection.

sounds like one to get dennis. i will be putting this on my need to get list. thanks for posting.  nows is the time for you to get the pruners out and start making some cuttings and creating an ebay listing.  if/when you do, can you send me a pm?  i am interested.  have a great day.  oh!  and how bout them figs? haha

All of these figs are super fantastic and taste amazing!  Some will make you pass out with just one bite!  But those listed above are in the same category as Main Street Purple.  The only difference is MSP bears real late.  And on a bad year (2013), MSP did outstanding for a very young tree.

Hey Alan! If I could describe the taste of Black Maderia, I would say ........well first have you ever tasted sorghum molasses? If so, then you know sorghum molasses is 3 times thicker than regular black molasses, but not as strong. Black Maderia has a small cavity in the center. In that center is a thick gob of sorghum molasses that is thick, super sweet, rich with strong berry overtones. It's a unique taste like none other. Malta Purple Red does taste similar but the Berry honey flavor is a little stronger. Italian 258 is similar the BM and MPR too. But this is just my opinion. Looking forward to a super fantastic fig year this year!

Dennis, thanks for the helpful info! Have you heard of Figueira? I was given cuttings of it by a Portuguese client and I was told that they had brought it over from Portugal many years ago. I tried searching it by I am under the impression that Figueira or Figueria roughly means fig? My cuttings do have leaves but I'm not sure if identification by leaf would be accurate at this point.

I learned this year that some romance languages distinguish between the fruit and the tree such as FR> Pomme = "Apple," Pommier = "Apple Tree". Similarly,
FR> Figue/Figuier
PT> Figo/Figueira
ES> Higo/Higuera

That's a beauty, Dennis. Is it typically a late-season ripener or does it just fruit all fall and into winter?

Rick, I'm not sure. I got my plant in early Fall only a few figs on. I repotted in placed it in full sun and the figs ripened. I will have more info this year. Thanks!

Allen, I'd say it has to be the taste.

Alan,
From what I've read on this forum, the NdC and KB could be the same fig. When Herman was selling his KB cuttings on eBay, he advertised it as a rain tolerant fig.
