Maine Nursery with figs

Today I visited a local nursery in Maine and talked to the owner for a short time. He showed me a collection of fig trees he keeps inside his greenhouses. He has some very nice looking fig trees. All his trees are in pots. I did not get any pictures as I was pressed for time. I talked to him about trading for another variety and he was upto the idea. The tree he has the most of is an unknown Italian black. So I will be going back soon to visit him with one of my black unknowns. He has a few fig trees from another customer that he is keeping in his greenhouses and told me I should talk to this guy for he has several varieties but he did not know what type they were. It was funny because he said I was the first non-European decent American to ask him about his figs. It just goes to show you how few people in Miane grow figs or are that interested in them. I'm trying to change that. I will keep you informed on the outcome of my next visit and get some pictures of the fig trees. He does have some small trees for sale.

Interesting!  It does sound, however, like the need for a greenhouse might be a limiting factor in your state.

How neat to get to talk, face to face, with someone in you own area, that can share info and experience!  I bet he enjoyed the chat as much as you.  I'm in zone 4 in so. WI and just found out the fig I bought three yrs. ago is an Italian Honey Fig.  Just because it's a lot harder to get figs in these zones, isn't an excuse to jump ship.  I put that last comment in for Bullet/Pete.  Ya know, my Dad was career Navy and he talked about the rum but never mentioned anything else...

For some, it's the challenge  - - and then you get to eat it.

hi, i'm newbie to this forum...

wish list : any LSU fig, Smith, Hollier, Red Lebanese

Afriadoni, are you talking about the Italian black fig or the Italian Honey fig?  What months do you get fresh figs off you trees?  What other varieties do you own?  I have sandy soil a foot down but can't plant inground due to -20 F. temps in winter.  Sometimes it is another 10 to 15 degrees colder...

Swizzle, which nursery?

Risbara's Nursery.

@ greenbud, I believed what afriadoni talking is different variety that u guys talking about... Neither Italian black or Italian honey fig. It is kurtmani or red Israel .....

Thanks Ong888, I am just trying to absorb and remember as much as I can from everyone here!  It is so good to learn and not have to pay thousands of $s to do so.
