Malta Black

This fig is originally from former Bellclare collection. It seems to ripen early. They just turned dark yesterday. I haven't picked them yet, I will wait one more day.

Yes it does, get ripe early,it is delicious, productive and hardy, here in NJ.
Another Jewel,of a fig

Hmm, gimme some...

35. MALTA BLACK (Grandparent to Celeste) (a) medium, black, dark red center, sweet (2 crops)

To  Bass/Herman/George

grandparent to Celeste. I would like to know if you grow this type and if so does it drop figs like Celeste trees do ?

If it holds main crop then this is type i will like to obtain somehow.
I have heard of it and seen on Belleclare list but never gave much thought because of Celeste heritage made me shy away.

I believe I mentioned some tima ago that I wanted to buy a malta black when I was at belleclares once, but the owner talked me out of it and into getting sals of corleone.  If anyone wants to trade the 2 aformentioned figs send me an e-mail.

Hmm, the Malta Black. My two trees are also in the process of having their fig turn colors. Looking forward to tasting it! My small trees have not dropped any figs.

The tree is loaded with figs, it only dropped 2 or 3 figs out of 30 something so not too bad. I can see the celeste similarities in earliness, but the figs look slightly different. I will update you on it.

No fruit drop here and my Plant is very young too, maybe 2.5 years old. Full of fruits, and tasted last year too.

All this talk makes me want one

Yipeeee............ thanks to a kind member I have a young tree, only 8 or 9 months old. To BASS, many thanks for posting this thread. I was giving
the least TLC to my Malta Blk. It was like OK to kaput. It had all its leaves dropped and now re-sprouted with nice vigor in the jungle fig patch. Now,
its going to get some special TLC to make up for..........Yeah a special thanks to all for posting such invigorating feedbacks. Meant alot for my zone.

Picked today 8/7
Do I really need to comment on these photos?

Sooooooooooooo delicious looking. Bass, how's the taste compare to Celeste, like do you prefer this MB over Celeste ?

The first one I picked was just a little soft, it tasted average. I picked another one that was dead ripe, it was super sweet. It has a taste of its own, I have to eat several more to describe the flavor a little better. It is a better quality than Celeste, and about the same sweetness. The skin is not as thin as a Celeste.

It has a closed eye, which will make it perfect in rainy summers.

thanks Bass. Very useful feedback & good thing my MB never died thru neglect. I honestly never thought much of it until this thread was posted. Its definetly going to get TLC. Its doing well for now ... on its own merits.

yes you must comment.  how did it taste?  ;)

Yeap!  Good job Bass!  I have one and it is a fast grower.  Mine started a couple of weeks ago!  I covered mine with netting and the taste is awesome too!  Fig lovers must get this tree.  cheers,

how would someone go about getting one of these trees?

Hi Bass,

I would be interested in receiving a cutting of your Malta Black Fig Tree. Is that possible?
