Malta Mission 8-6-14

Not the best pics. My Iphone camera is acting silly and on the real dark figs the pics are really dark. Medium size fig that has a very good flavor of berry and just a little figgy, and a slight seed crunch. Very tight eye. This is and will be a very good one. About and 8 for now.

Thanks Mike keep them coming.

If you can set your exposure go for +1 or +2.  How's the real estate market down there?  :)

Bob, the real estate market has been really good.

If you can adjust the exposure on the IPhone camera I don't
know anything about it.

Mike, That's a great looking fig. What's the history on that fig? I haven't heard of it.

Mike, being a compulsive reader and learner, I failed to find much on this one. What else can you tell us about it? History?
Looks great!

Edit - sorry for the repeat question, I was searching while Art was posting :)

Mike, you have been way successful this year, another nice one. Congrats.

Mike,

I have not heard of the variety called Malta Mission before.
Malta Black - yes; Black Mission - yes; Vista Mission - yes; simply Mission - ok, yes...

What is its history and why this name?
Is it a distinctive variety?

I heard once that Maltese Falcon was similar to Black Mission.  Is this what you're calling Maltese Mission or you have another source?

All of my figs have a dusty textured skin but I see several people posting photos of figs with a lot of gloss to them.  Is that because of a more humid climate?  Or did you wash and wax it? ;)

Harvey,

I was told that some varieties loose the gloss in CA after caprification.
You have the wasp and hence a dusty skin on your figs.

Igor, I am sorry but I can not give you any back ground on this fig. I will tell you that it came from one of the most respected forum
members who is in the NJ area.  I will see if I can contact him and get more info.

Mike,
Thank you!
If you could find out a bit about the name that would be terrific!

Igor, prior to last year, my figs were not caprified (my Marabout C. Smyrna dropped all figs until I carried caprifigs from 1,500' away to my trees) and I still did not have glossy figs.

Harvey, No, I do not Wash or Wax any of my figs. Just picked off the tree.

Thanks, Mike.  I didn't serious think you waxed your figs but threw that in as a joke but I thought maybe they were buffed up some.

I believe it was Herman that once said that what later became known as Maltese Falcon was similar to Mission, but better.  Or something like that.

Okay, here is some help.  I didn't remember that correctly, just bits and pieces.

Harvey,

Thanks for the link!
It explains the names.
It would be interesting to plant M. Falcon, M. Mission, and B. Mission in CA with wasps next to each other and see if they are any different.
In my neighborhood I found at least 3 figs that look like Black Mission. The differ by the fruit size on average and productivity only.

I acquired that way-back as GM#2 from my sister property in Malta.
The mama tree produces small longish dark figs there.
I had posted pics for ID here, & (mostly b/c of leaf shape) I was told that it is of the 'Mission' kind.
Hence the name ...

Hi George.

Do you have a comparison of the fig when grown in Malta vs New Jersey? It might be worthy of a new thread for all of the members who have experienced the same fig in different locations to describe how different (or similar) they can be.

George, thanks for that info. I had vaguely remembered reading that but could not put a finger or link on it.

Harvey, thanks for that link.
