Maltese Beauty 8-27-14

Well, here it is. What a disappointment these guys turned out to be. Both of them had really tough skin with no taste. Both of them had absolutely no sweetness or any flavor. Both get a 0
There is another ripening now and about ten more that may ripen. We shall see.

It would be interesting to hear others who have ripened MB figs to hear what they think of this variety.  I did a quick search and Bass had a post on the flavor (a very positive impression) but I didn't see others.  Hopefully it can be chalked up to the plant being young.

Wow, Mike, thanks for the update. I have it on my wish list and curious if I should remove it or not.
Is it in the ground?

My Brown Turkey got more points (I posted about it today) than your MB, that’s funny!

I am also surprised to hear this, I also would be curious to hear from others who have had it ripen for them.

Thanks Mike! Maybe next year it will be better. Emerald Strawberry aka UCR 143-36 turned out to be a zero again this year. There is one that I could not stop eating at UCD last week and that's UCR-160-50! It has an amazing rich flavor!

Mike, can you post a picture of the plant?

Steve, I think it will be because its a young plant but it was sooooooo disappointing.

Greg, here is a pic of this little guy. Its in a buried 5 gal pot and if you can't tell it is growing mostly side ways. It has refused to do much
growing the whole spring/summer.

Mike,

A fig in a 5 gal pot is huge in my book!
Most of mine this year that produced very decent figs were in 2-3 gal pots.

No excuse here!

It received the same water, fertilizer and sunlight that all others did but it chose to respond poorly. Maybe it will
change its ways next year. LOL

Mike,

Isn't that just odd......for me Maltese beauty has been one of the star growers this year......from a stick to this is in 6 months or so.

Sorry to hear that. I hope they get better for you.

Mike ,
I hope it is just its youth that is the problem.
My experience with it is that it is a very strong grower , in fact I've been referring to it as " the beast " because it out grows most other figs like an RDB.
Has beautiful branching and sets fruit young.
I hope to get a few later this season to try.
Best ,
Kerry

I'm sorry to hear that Mike. Mine were excellent or at least the mocking birds thought so.

I can't handle the truth, a zero...????....LOL   Well you killed my Ebay listing.....just kiddin    I like that you called it as you see it.  Hopefully, it was just it's age or something...???    I don't have this one yet.  I will wait on more testimonies.

Mike, I'm sure you have thought of this already but do you think that at least part of the reason for slow growth is that there are too many figs set for the size of the plant?  Maybe if you took off some of the figs it would resume growth?  On the plus side it looks very productive!

Steve, I thought about it but in the spring it put on its new leaves. It never has put on any more. The figs appeared well after
its initial and I felt like there would be more growth to come like all my other plants. But no, it never happened.

Hi newnandawg,
It is too late now, but when one of my trees is stubborn I double the fertilizer . It has always worked ( well, ok, except for longue d'aout - but is starting to pay now - apparently I was still too light on lda ... surrounding trees pumped the fertilizer probably... ).
If it doesn't grow right away, it builds a thick trunk, and the year after I'll get the growth .
But for sure so many figs didn't help let her grow .
A 0, wahou, you almost killed the hype around it .

same thing happened to my Black Madeira about a week ago. now i water it more regularly and they are much better. i think letting it really ripen might not work for some figs. then again, picking it early doesn't help either. my Ischia Black USDA/UCD were "green" tasting when i pick them early.

Mike ,
Mine grew from small rooted cuttings to the size pictured this season.
One in a 5 gallon SIP and the other in a 25 gallon SIP.

The one on the left in 5 gallon is 4 feet tall.
On the right in the 25 gallon is closer to 4.5 to 5 feet tall.

Kerry, thanks for showing those pics. I may lose what fruit is remaining on mine but I moved it to a 10 gal pot today
and I will be giving it a dose of fertilizer tomorrow.
