Maltese Falcon

This is a variety that came originally from George.

Gorgi, can you give us more info about this variety?
It's shiny black. about the same shape of a black mission.

Was very sweet, the taste is almost like a nice ripe black mission or a vista.

I got more fruits out of mine than George so I think I can chime in.
This is my fruit favorite for taste and flavor.
I am sure this is not MIssion, but a better fig, than Mission.
I let mine hang down till fully ripe and boy I got something in this land wich is not suppose to be hot enough for perfect ripening.

I can see why you picked it, as it looks like a bird was already tasting it.

I've got this plant and the Malta purple-red. One was previously called GM-1 and the other GM-5, but I can't recall which was which. They both are supposed to be select figs from Gorgi's large numbered collection. Glad to hear such good reviews on the Maltese Falcon.

Just picked another fig of the Maltese Falcon, it was larger and rounder. It was riper and juicer and excellent tasting.

Gorgi, give us some more info on this fig.

Ciao Gorgi,

How would you rate the Malta Purple-Red for flavor?  How does it do in very hot, humid/rainy climates like South Louisiana?  What kind of eye does it have?

Thank you so much,

noss

Bass,
I wanted some "oblong" (tubular/longish) figs from Malta.
I acquired two; originally tagged as UnKown GM#2 ,5.
#2 produces small figs while #5 produces large figs.
I had asked for an ID (on GW/FF) for #2; and was told that it is a Mission fig (small-type).
At a young age, #5's leaves seemed similar to me, sooo, I assumed it was
also of the Mission fig (large-type). It turned out not to be the case.

So, I dubbed them:
GM#2 = Malta Mission (hey! there is such a thing as a Vista Mission...)
GM#5 = Maltese Falcon

[E: BTW; great pics!]

noss,
GM #1 = Malta Purple Red is a totally different fig (roundish).
It did great for me here in NJ and for Jon in CA
(2 years ago, he rated it as one of his top ten better-tasting NEW figs).

Not sure how it will perform there in S-LA. It does have a short neck and
may not droop till ripe. Jon has tons of pics of its eye on his fig DB.

The "Purple Red" part came from me showing a sample fruit to the
DiPaola brothers (of Belleclare, NY) and they both indepentently said
that it is  a Purple Red.
I guess that they were equating/comparing it to one of their own...

Ciao gorgi,

Thanks for the info.
