Maltese Falcon

Thought I'd share a couple pictures of my Maltese Falcon fruit. This is it's third season. I did get a couple ripe figs last year but, those don't compare to these. Big black figs with an excellent taste. Tight eyed, extremely rain tolerant. Kind of remind me of a rain tolerant version of Black Mission.

I would like to hear what others think about this fig.

Oh Tim, that's beautiful!

Tim, very nice looking fig. So would that be a 10 on a 1-10 scale? LOL

I'd like to know what I think of this fig, too.  Feel free to send me one  :)

With that big void I hope it's not really a brown turkey   ;)

Gorgeous  Tim !!!

Love the black exterior. You say excellent flavor?
do we know how cold hardy it is?

Looks great Tim, I just did an air layer on mine about 2 hours ago, no figs yet as it's only a year old but there is enough to do an air layer so I have a back up. Can't wait to see and taste the figs from it. Best of luck with yours.

been putting off trying to source this one.. but i guess i better get to it. you fig looks wonderful :)

I have a three year old too. The figs started turning dark so I will post them in a week or two when they're ripe.

It is a good fig, it's like an Iimproved mission fig.

Thanks everyone for your comments. It's not big enough for air-layers yet. Mike, I would rate a 10 for me here. Not only is it beatiful, it tastes great and is super rain tolerant. Bob, you're too funny. Maybe it just a humongous Celeste :O) Rookie and 7deuce, I look forward to seeing your pictures of ripe figs. Tim

"Tight eyed, extremely rain tolerant."  Thanks Tim, good data point to have.

Hi Steve, thats just what all of us down here on the Gulf coast needs in a fig. Now if it were just bird proof then we'd have something :O))  @ greg88, you are asking the wrong guy about cold hardiness. That's not something I worry about here, although I did protect it a little the first winter as advised by several members. Maybe Gorgi, Bass or Herman can chime in on cold hardiness.

Tim:

Can you post a photo of the tree?   Thanks for sharing photos of the leaves and fruit.

I'm surprised that as sought after as this tree is, that you are the only one this year to post any photos of the fruit.   I just did a search on Maltese Falcon.    There may be other posts that it's tied to, but there certainly isn't much posted on it this year.   I would have thought there would be more.    If there are any others out there that have this variety and would like to share photos of it, I think it would be great.

For a very brief moment, I saw a new thread asking info about this fig
(then the same new thread mysteriously vanished!).

One can find ALL info within this F4F/FF by doing a google search
(and I do mean the real google):

site:figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com Maltese Falcon

Gorgi:

Greetings.  I posted it and then deleted it quickly.  I though it would be best to tie into another recent thread rather than create a brand new one.   Hopefully someone has some photos of a plant or tree.   Till then, I could go googling......  I don't mess too much with any other forums though.   My Maltese Beauty is doing so well, I would like her sister, but would love to see some photos of it to keep me over until cutting season begins.

Dan, the google search that Gorgi mentioned would be for Figs4Fun (not other forums).  The way google works, if you put the string that Gorgi listed in the google input line, it'll use google's engine to search just the site listed.  You can type:
                   site:figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com Maltese Falcon
or
                        Maltese Falcon
site:figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com
in to google, and it'll find results that are just on this forum.  There's a description that Jason (satellitehead) wrote up, listed under Jon's "Getting Started" sticky thread near the top of the forum topics list.

Mike

p.s. Not sure why you want to see a photo of a tree.  Maybe part of the reason that members aren't posting pics of their whole trees is just because of the sad situation where unscrupulous ebay sellers steal photos to scam unsuspecting buyers.  Nobody here wants to inadvertently contribute to such sketchy behavior.  But it's these higher demand trees that seem to expose such goofiness among the unwashed hordes.

I didn't know that.  That kinda sucks.   I like posting and viewing pictures, I think it adds so much great content to the forum, but not if it's going to get stolen.

I'll try the google search.....

Thanks

Looks amazing.  =)

very nice

Very nice fig and photos, thanks for sharing.

Best,
Tam

like i posted sometime ago, i have been putting off looking for this fig for ever. not sure why. it looks very much like some of the other figs. every time i look at it, it reminds me of NdC and Kathleen's Black. some say Kathleen's Black looks like a Black Mission.

does anyone have all of above to compare which is the best? i mean.. best to your taste buds. i'm sure there will be some difference in taste between the members and climate and soil and all that stuff.

So, I've got Black Mission, and where I live barely gets 16 inches or rain per year. Does that mean I wouldn't see a drastic difference between Black Mission and Maltese Falcon?

Are they genetically different? In my corner the Missions are very nice, I would say one of the best tasting. Or maybe the strain is one of the best. They never split, large and juicy.
