Manual defoliation of trees

Eli, Like you I have my fig trees growing out of black pots. Removing leaves is really exposing your trees to some intense heat.
I'm not trying to tell you what to do but those pots really get quite hot in the direct sun.
Most of my pots are shaded by over growth and other trees so it's not so bad for me now but if you can add some bark mulch to the top of your pots and perhaps place your pots inside a larger container so that there is a gap, it will really help distress your trees.

Removing 1/4 or 1/3 of leaves under certain conditions might well help mature figs. Any more defoliation than that is pure nonsense. Not only will it reduce the quality of the fruit it will stress the tree and make it susceptible to winter kill.

Do what Herman does, remove the fig fruits that don't have time to mature. Keep the leaves. Give them as much light, heat, and season extension as you can muster. That's the formula for ripening figs not what that kid in the video proposed.

I just went out and removed about 10% of the leaves off Crimson and Princess grapes. These are leaves around the clusters to help them color. In humid climates the same may be done to reduce bunch rots. Removing 100% of leaves would ruin the grape crop pronto.

Leon i think you are right these pots realy get beaten up in the summer heat
Regarding the quality i think it may me inferior after the defoliation as its not physiologic for the tree. Well its good to have a bt to experiment with..
