Mario's cuttings froze in the mailbox

Yesterday I was watching for Mario's cuttings but gave up by supper time. It's now 8:am and 26 F and Mario's cuttings sat in the mailbox over night.  [image] I empathized with other member's about these disasters.  Now  I've joined the frozen mail club.
PS  Mail might be comming very late now because of the holidays.

Soni

I would definitely not give up on them.  26 degrees doesn't seem too extreme, especially if the cuttings are relatively thick.

i had one that was frozen last yr. they rotted rather quickly once thawed and i tried to root them. i would take them out and thaw them in room temp where it's dry. clean it thoroughly once dried and try to root.

Thanks,  I had such a sick feeling. UGH!   I needed a little encouragement. Nothing lost and everything to gain by trying to root them.
I hope the other members of the "wait and see" group have good results. I'd like to know how they all turn out. .  I've always heard that gardeners were the most opptomistic people.

Cheer/lighten up; they should still be viable.

My garage stored figs survived @ 20*F.
(some say it could have been a lower temp.)

According to our Dr. Al (Tapla), it is actually
a prolonged combination of below-freezing
temperatures AND wind that kills/desiccates figs.

Thanks Gorgi,  I spent all my life without real winters. Its all new to me.

I woke up to -17F today...fortunately nothing in the mailbox.  I have some cuttings from Bob that I'm waiting for so I called the Post Office and asked them not to deliver them today...much too arctic here in Maine right now.  That's the coldest temp we've probably had in the last 3 years.  Too early in the season for this!  Good news is that it'll definitely be a white Christmas.

Soni, 26 doesn't seem too bad, but were they wrapped in damp paper?  I've heard others say that it's better to ship them just wrapped in plastic this time of year.

They may still root and be great little trees.

If the cuttings were fully dormant 26 degrees shouldn't hurt them.

I think they should be alright too! :)

@ Greg  YEOW  -17 I cant even imagine, but a white Christmas is what dreams are made of.  Isn't there a song that goes something like that?

My potted figs in our detached garage have been at 28f for awhile this year and the soil is hard (feels frozen) so this is good to know Gorgi

Yeah...new record cold for that date for us (previous record -11F in 1972).  The air shot strait from the arctic towards my house!
