I wanted to compare the two, since I always suspected that they might not be the same.
Today I had them side by side. The leaf patterns are close but the fruit is totally different.
The St Anthony when ripe turns yellow while the Marseilles retain its green color.
The is no doubt in my mind that this Sicilian St. Anthony is the clear winner of the two.
Yes it is sweeter, softer, more moist and has more honey flavor that someone might look for in a honey type fig. It is more prolific. It puts out one only crop and is an early to mid ripening fig.
IMO, the original source is much more important than the common name of the varieties.
