Marseilles VSB, Fico Preto and Celeste

Catching up on photos here.  It seems once Dennis got his photo posting superpowers back, I became unable to post photos.  He must have stolen my photomojo.  It turned out not to be a temporary glitch so now I'm stuck posting postage stamp sized images which you have to click on to see.

MVSB Preto Celeste 2013-09-16 16.57.03.jpg

MVSB tastes like no other fig for me so far.  The quality of the flavor is in a class with St Rita.  So far these are the best I've had and they're only in their second season.  I haven't had a Col de _______ or Maltese anything yet so take it for what it's worth.  Fico Preto split before it colored up and ripened so it never got a fair chance.  It wasn't very good.  The celeste was fair - it was a first fruit of a baby plant.  These ripened in September under great conditions.

Very nice! How do u compare mvsb to Hardy Chicago for flavor? Sounds like u like it....

Nice fig, and congrats Bob.  Can't really see the detail in the pics, but glad to hear of another MVSB success.

Mike

Looking forward to sampling these varieties.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the report, Bob.  I planted a MBVS in May and it has shot up over 3' tall since then.  Hoping I get a nice batch of figs next year, assuming little die-back this winter.  It was trying to grow over 15 figs this year already, but I removed them, as they wouldn't have ripened in time.
I'm keeping my 4 Preto in pots.  Might be a couple years before I get to taste them.

MBVS surprised me and was my best this year. It all comes down to ripeness, I think. Mine ripened in perfect weather and were very rich.

Hardy Chicago is good.  My bush is in ground so it's huge and very productive.  But it's not in a class with St Rita and MVSB taste-wise.

Figs specimen are very variable.
I do have both Hardy Chicago, and Marseilles black vs.
I too agree ,that tho they have similar leaves ,Marseilles black vs is a better fig specimen, and much more productive.

That's great to hear. I love the figs from my HC but I had to remove the figs from my first year Marseilles black VS because there was no way they were going to ripen. Next year is going to be a good year! The leaves on my Nav's Unknown Dark Greek look very similar to Hardy Chicago also, but this is also a first year tree so we'll see what they look like next year.

Rc thanks for pictures of the fruit and in humble opinion there fine as thumbnails and load quickly when clicked open in another window.

Three great figs in any collection
Thanks for sharing the pictures
