Martha/Belleclare video - pots on concrete

This video has generated so much interest and questions......so cool.

Well, I have a question myself.  The pots containing fig trees are on concrete for warmth.  Of course that is in a cooler climate than here in Houston, TX.  Would the same hold true for me?  Would I be OK putting black nursery pots on concrete in full sun?

Steve, I think in your climate and mine we would have to stand there with a water hose at the ready all day.

Same here! Summers go to 113 degrees easy, and I would NEVER put containers on that hot concrete!  It will melt your flip flops!  Imagine what it will do to those tender roots!

I think black pots aren't ideal unless in the cooler locations though I think anybody growing in pots could do well with them if they covered or painted the pots white in the warm months.  I have seen some vendor selling white skirts that can slip around pots.  Having black pots in late winter or early spring in the warmer regions can still help plants start growing sooner.  I have some pots which I've painted white on one side and I've turned the white portion of pots to face the direction of the sun during the warmer months.

You folks grow in pots ?

Steve,

It is NOT something you want to do. You will want to shield your containers from direct sunlight. The ability of the root to take up moisture and nutrients drop off @85F. I had one tree in a white five gallon bucket. When I repotted the tree, there were no roots within two inches of the sunny side. The roots on the shaded side reached the side and minimally circled.

Martin, there are other reasons to grow in containers besides portability/overwintering. Much of the soil in Houston (especially the south side) is RKN infected, also I was able to grow 10X more trees than if I had been growing in the ground.

Martin,

I grow in pots when I run out of yard.  Unexpected (not) since I just joined the forum around Oct/Nov 2012 and my yard is maxed out and then some.  Silly me.  I think in my first couple of posts I said something like "maybe 3 or 4 figs in the ground and maybe a couple in pots".  This fig "sickness" can take hold of you very quickly.
