Martin's ITALIAN unknown, Emilia Romagna, Martin's Unknown.

Ciao Friends,

I don't know exactly what thread,, may have been on other site about the posting of Martins Unknown on Jon's website.  I need to make a clarification on this as I received cuttings which took from Martin's ITALIAN Unknown last year, I have a tree from these cuttings. I didn't want to dub it Martins Unknown then so I spoke with Martin about naming it for now, " Emilia Romagna".  This is what I call this tree in my business and on my website, so just to clarify there is a couple names for this tree already.  I had named it Emilia Romagna as the home of where this tree came from Originally, It had been dubbed that for quite a while now, as some people have ordered Emilia Romagna cuttings from me.  Also, the Italian Unknown by Martin was referred by himself as the " Italian Unknown"  which it isn't written at the Figs4fun variety list, only listed as " Martins Unknown"  which Martin had another unknown tree that has been scattered across the country as " Martins Unknown", so there are two trees with the same name, originating from Martin, but Martins two unknowns had two very different sources, one from Italy, and the other, I don't remember.  I do remember this tree having a beautiful BIG fat trunk.  Maybe just a heads up to Jon to maybe include this information on the website, its the Italian Unknown, and also the name Emilia Romagna so there is a common link between these plants.

In short, this is what I understand of these trees so far, If I'm wrong, let me know:

Martins ITALIAN unknown/ Emilia Romagna = Same tree
Martins Unknown- different tree than above.

Ciao Ciao

P.S.  I received Martins Italian unknown actually fall 2008, Sorry.

Maggie,

Thanks for the clarification.

I had cuttings of one of the unknowns and after a failed rooting attempt, I am in search of more cuttings. I would like to have cuttings from the tree described in this post. Is this Emilia Romagna = Martin's ITALIAN unknown?

JD

Ciao JD.  No, the one in the picture is the one he called Martins Unknown, it is not the MARTIN'S  ITALIAN UNKNOWN aka Emilia Romagna.  This was the fat trunk tree that is somewhere I forget where.  This is a beautiful tree.

P.S.  I found the thread that this was recently mentioned on about the unknowns,  its Salvatore's thread, " root pruning chainsaw style"  I hope thats right, just posted within the last day or so.
Ciao

Ciao Maggie i recieved your email and came here to read post.
The one pictured in This thread is Martins Unknown .
When sometime ago when i first started posting about it i called it
"My Unknown" then as time went by and it was passed out people started calling it "Martins Unknwon" This plant was bought off ebay as a Celeste many seasons back but its not as the figs are to big . This tree was given to an illinois forum member late last season for me its gone now which was my intention.

The one on your site and Jons site is the italian one that came as i talked once again to my friend who brought some sticks back from his trip to Italy in his suit pocket and gave me 1 which i put in a table top fountain for several months and 1 day it rooted. The second time i talked to him a while back and i believe after i sent you it but im not absolutely sure he told me this
That him and his brother left there home town of Mola Di Bari and traveled some North as about 10 kilometers south of Bologna passing sme farms and saw some fig trees right out side of farm on side of road and stopped and only took a couple sticks. I called it " My Italian Unknown" along with many other names that were not so nice after it bloodied me when i was root pruning it and stuck me good right in the neck. This tree i posted i was destroying and sent Jon some sticks, in the process i found a sucker and decided to pot it dont ask why !!!
I recently brought the tiny stick in pot in the house it looks dead but time will tell on this one its only a few inches tall at best. If it makes it i give it 1 more chance if not i dont worry about it anymore . Here is another picture of my gone italian unknown one without leaves its the one right behind boat with cut off main trunk and the tree is brownish or tan colored compared to the other ones, and the other picture its the one right in the forfront if anyone not sure look at its main trunk its cut down low and has a tiny stick next to its trunk with a couple green leaves.
Sorry if the post came out too long .

Martin unknown with pictures has close resemblance to my Vicenzo and Enrico. Pictures were posted with the help of Gorgi on Nov 2008 under the thread "Australian Figs" in Garden Web fig forum. The pic's are gone now unless someone have copied it. I will try to look for those pic's & post. I am rooting a couple of Martin unknowns. Hopefully it will solve the naming issue.
