Maryland Fig Review - 2014 - Prepping for Winter

Hey Mark.
One of these days we should meet. I love Vista!!

Negronne figs are really some of the best IMHO

Hey Rich, I agree. Ive really been pleased with the sheer quantity and quality of these Negronne. Happy figging to you and Mike in VA.

Great looking figs.

Greetings. I have a really large Brown Turkey that is a day away from being picked BUT I don't want the critters, especially ants to find it first. So, i remembered that i had one organza bag in a drawer someplace. I dug around and searched long enough to find it and placed it around our BT. Plan to pick tomorrow!

Greetings. Was able to pick the above Brown Turkey along with a nice selection of others that are enjoying this late August sunshine.

Mark,

The fig gods have been blessing you this month!  Loving the pictures.  Enjoy the harvests.

Thanks Frank, appreciate the kind words. After this past Winter, I thought things might be a disaster. Nice to reap the tastes of such a variety all on the same day.

I feel the same.  I'm very pleased with my results as well, despite the winter.

Hi Maro2bear,
Nice harvest !
I don't know all those strains. Could you ,next time , place the name next to each fig ? Not mandatory, just asking :) .
I have one unknown that started swelling ...
But here, we get showers every day or every over day since beginning august and the sun went on vacation almost since that date ... Saturday, we had 9°C in the morning... That's cold for August ... and for ripening figs ...
Only positive point, my hedgehog is back in the garden and is snacking on slugs - but I would need an army of hedgehogs to help on slugs...

All the hot, humid weather over the last few days has made our fig trees pop with ripe figs! Here's a collage of one bunch we picked yesterday before the thunderstorms hit. The large fig being held by my wife is a Brown Turkey. We don't want to OD on fruit sugars, so we decided to dehydrate this mix for later enjoyment.

Hot weather means more figs ripening in Maryland. Another plate full of a mixed bag, including Madeline d'Deux.

Mark, that is too incredible. looks so good. Congrats!

Thanks Wayne. This is turning out to be a great Summer for figs. Many of these figs are coming from cuttings that I won on one of this Forums "contests." I really think my drip irrigation program has helped things along, coupled with pinching back, and some luck, and finally some long hot Summer days. Our Brown Turkeys are hanging like tennisballs by the time we pick them, gorgeous colors as well.

And here's Madeline DD and Ghosh. I also posted the Ghosh pix under another older thread where this variety was discussed a bit.

.......and Carini from Sicily coming in now as well. These Carini were started from cuttings offered up a year or so ago by a generous Forum member.

Here's a handful of Brown Turkey. Really coming into their own with these hot early September temperatures, and not much rain. My drip irrigation system ensures steady daily amount of moisture.

Another winner Mark, congrats.

Here we are at the end of a pretty good year here in Maryland as far as fig yield. Here's a few Black Yugoslav hanging in there in these last few warm, sunny days of October.
